Who was the bloke the main commentator (was it Rory Lawson) was calling "The Fridge" just before FT after he won a scrum penalty?
I was flicking back and fore to this game during ad breaks of Scotland v Israel football build up.

Carlu Sadie. A very unfit looking prop who took apart the B&I Lions team off he bench, same as this game. Leinster were clinical but the refs interpretation of the ruck throughout was interesting. Leinster went straight to deck several times, pre latched and got away with it constantly.
I reckon they intimidate refs by playing so physical by the time they step over the line the ref feels like they have allowed it for 20 mins or so and therefore they get away with it for the rest of the game.
Sarries do this as well, so not surprising Leinster using it as a tactic.
Weeg we’re all over the shop and really didn’t have an answer to the constant in your face blitz

Ashman on loan to Glasgow for rest of season.
This is very good news. Not so much for Warriors unless Brown is out longer than feared, and/or they are really worried about Turner's concussions or something, but really good for Scotland.
Ashman was at best 3rd choice for Sale and no prospect of displacing the other 2 (quite amazing given if anyone thinks we have problems with lineout throwing they have never seen Duhan's brother consistently missing a barn from the inside).
So while I'm not generally in favour of the SRU manipulating player moves, this one is a no brainer and the hope has to be to keep him at Scotstoun, and with Cockerill out of the picture a real chance to get young Harrison on the pathway to Scotland via Edinburgh

Ashman on the bench for Sale tomorrow. Has he been recalled already or does the loan start after this weekend (which would be unusual)

Apparently Ashman recalled permanently now.
Steyn playing at 13 this weekend. I think he might be Glasgow's best 13.

13 when he broke into the team and was very good, good enough to keep Jones and Grigg out.Cameo wrote:Apparently Ashman recalled permanently now.

But between injury then (last season needs must) on the wing he hasn't played there in must be close to 2 years

Is Dempsey actually good or is it just worth getting any available option at 8 on the books?
He looks quite quick and powerful but no idea what he’s like all round.

When he came through in Aus he was very good. Laterally he looked average and almost disinterested, so I was a bit concerned that Glasgow have signed him.Mikey Brown wrote:Is Dempsey actually good or is it just worth getting any available option at 8 on the books?

But his performances have been top drawer - caveat is the quality of opposition, especially this week, has not always been great. what I can say is that the air of indifference has totally disappeared, he is fully engaged and does not take a step back. No worries on that score

George Horne really seems to have gone backwards.
Can’t really argue with the result but there were opportunities there for a more clinical side. A very Scottish performance.

Decent effort there but not enough. Thompson continues to look good (especially his kicking) but he does get a bit overpowered when he takes it into contact.

Probably agree La Rochelle just did enough to deserve the win, but it was a tight game.Mikey Brown wrote:George Horne really seems to have gone backwards.

its odd to go up against a team with twice the budget, runners up in HC and T14 last season and coming away a bit disappointed they didn't win. Suspect most thought it would be a hammering.
Glasgow are still a work in progress, still a couple of players short of what is needed at this level, a few more short of what is needed for consistently high performance levels across the season.

not sure the over powered bit is anything. very few 10s don't if not supported well. Its a problem Glasgow need to work on - lack of support of ball carrier, some players needing to work harder to do that. I think one break aside Glasgow defended well, had the better of possession by a fair bit - thus limiting what La Rochelle could do. They deserve a lot of credit for that. The attack at times looked very good and could open them up, but too often lack of support meant slow ball even when it wasn't turned over. Big work onCameo wrote:Decent effort there but not enough. Yeah that's fair. No expectation of a win going in to it but frustrating to get so close (to a draw at least) and not take the opportunity.septic 9 wrote:Probably agree La Rochelle just did enough to deserve the win, but it was a tight game.Mikey Brown wrote:George Horne really seems to have gone backwards.

The McKay comment was when Glasgow put a brilliant move together in the last 10 minutes and he chose to take contact with (what looked like) plenty of time to draw and pass, putting Forbes in to quite a bit of open space. It wasn't a walk in necessarily but could well have lead to a try.

Can see what you mean to some extent, but I don’t think he’s going to be typecast in that manner throughout his career (not saying you are saying that either). He’s still relatively new and people rarely turn up at the pro level as the finished package physically. If he puts in the hours down the gym (unlike another fly half of ours!), I can see it adding to his game. But he is a back, so he’ll never be as hard or as manly as a forward.Cameo wrote:Decent effort there but not enough. I had to re-type that last sentence as auto-correct wrote “manky”. Maybe I should have left it.

Totally not trying to typecast him and something that will improve. It's just he sometimes looks like he folds into contact (kinda curls up into a ball) which is a reasonable way of avoiding being held up but doesn't work when Glasgow don't get support around him. I think Hastings (and to some extent Russell) at least threaten to beat the tackler or get an offload away whereas with Thompson the defenders sense a turnover opportunity every time.
Plenty of time to improve and he continues to look like he has all the skills. He's got a very big boot for someone his size.

Re: The Glasgow Carpet Burns and Cary Grant Appreciation Thread
last year Glasgow were infected by Covid by Exeter, had to forfeit a match and fall out of the Heinekin Cup.
Montpellier have a mass covid outbreak, played Exeter last week, and Exeter with players who are full on stupid anti vaxxers.
news this morning implies that Glasgow unsurprisingly and like most teams are going to have a couple missing this week with covid or isolation rules (tighter in Scotland). But I wouldn't be surprised to see another mass infection from Exeter and 1872s in doubt

Good luck to him. Always great to watch. Occasionally frustrating, yes, but a brilliant skillset and had some fantastic moments for both Scotland and Glasgow.
