Borthwick gets DOR of the season award (really the only possible winner), probably jinxed us for Saturday though. Manager of the month in football normally is.

Earl got player of the season.....I wonder where he is wrt England now. Strikes me as he'd be a good partner for Curry.

He's an odd one. Feels like he can sort of do everything, and is clearly a real athlete, but Jones seems far from convinced. I can't remember how much injuries have played a part in that.

Just looked it up and he's never actually had a start. http://en.espn.co.uk/statsguru/rugby/pl ... view=match In theory he's a fantastic bench option, but you wonder if Jones has written him off after not making a serious impact in any of those showings?

It's strange this close to the RWC to have only Curry as a definite back row starter. I can't really see Earl ever getting into that category.

Bizarre to be handing out awards at this stage of the season. Surely would've made more sense to wait two weeks and do it after everything's finished - if Northampton win their next two games by 50 points, then it'd be reasonable to ask why Boyd didn't get it.

It sort of seems like a pointless award any way in that sense.

"And the winner of 'coach of the team who won the premiership' goes to... the coach of the winning team! Hooray!"

Not sure- if a newly promoted team made the playoffs, and say sarries won the title again, then maybe the coach of the former would likely have done a great (er)job?

Borthwick has taken a bunch of crap and made a silk purse.

Tempted to suggest Jones's successor could do the same, leading to Borthwick being the natural choice for the RFU perhaps?

Black tie dos being the best type of preparation for the playoffs clearly.

as per even Tigers fans, might be both premature and not the right gig for him.

Right gig but wrong time. At least four years to early. Borthwick is 42, he's got plenty of time to develop into the right man for the job and he's got a good base to work from.

It will be a very emotional day at Welford Road on Saturday as the club has just announced that Tiff Youngs has lost her battle with cancer.

I shared your original concerns about fronting it up with the press etc, its a huge part of the england gig and he plain isn't suited to it- not even sure media training will do that. The coaching side is probably ok if he gets the right backs and skills coaching.

Edwards IMO.
He's done HC at club level, and has done enough defence coach gigs - time to see if he can step into the big shoes.

Failing that, I'd be tempted by O'Gara. I'd also be tempted by Farrell, but not whilst Owen is still playing.

He's turned down HC gigs at intl level tho. It would be interesting.

I don't think I knew that - who and when?
However, he does keep developing as a coach and inspirer, not to mention being older and more experienced than whenever that opportunity came around...

He was iirc offered the wales job post Gatland, though on reflection that might be something I've imagined :). I might have extrapolated it from this sort of interview, and that he turned down an offer from wales to carry on as defence coach.
https://rugbyonslaught.com/shaun-edward ... d-england/
Its obviously a big step up being a head coach internationally- I've no doubt he can do the motivation bit tho.

My recollection is that he was offered the Wales defence role, after he'd agreed to go to France - but it's no more than recollection.

Yes, it's a step up to being HC, but he's more qualified than any other English option except Farrell - who's son is still playing.

The alternative, is going for another big name foreigner who's already done it all as HC - and isn't that what we don't want a repeat of?

Yep, could have extrapolated in my puzzlement that he hadn't gone for an HC job- would have thought he was a shoo in for wales tbh.

I don't mind edwards having a shot, but neither do I have an issue with a big name foreigner, the current one has been a big step up on the previous three/four home grown cheps.

Agreed, but I think that's a pretty unpopular opinion generally.

Certainly, Edwards is the most qualified English, international coach. If he wanted the England HC job I'd give it to him but will his face fit with the RFU? In terms of roots, background and image probably not 6 years ago but, come 2023, after 8 years of Jones, why should it not?
