… and to watch. So glad Sarries beat Tigers yesterday. Leicester grinding down Northampton last week was very disappointing.
It's an 80 minute game. If you only turn up for twenty minutes you can't expect to win.
Having seen the scoreline for this game I suspect BT are disappointed they didn't televise this one. Sounds like the highlights might be lengthy.
That it’s only 80 mins is news to me.
As a neutral person spending their money on watching rugby - something rugby desperately needs - watching Leicester bores me. If it bores someone who has played and watched the game since they were 8 and who understands the intricacies of the game, now including how long the matches last, goodness knows what a new set of eyeballs with a wallet thinks watching a team whose game plan revolves around repeatedly kicking the ball up in the air, passing one out before taking contact and winning some weird pushing competition.
Getting more people spending their money on the pro game is pretty topical right now.
Rugby union has always had a big emphasis on set piece play though, there's a sport like rugby union but without the set piece for those that prefer that. Tigers do kick a lot but Saints finished the first half having kicked once more than Tigers.
Tigers scored more tries as well, could it have been prettier for Tigers had there not been so many penalties from Saints? Possibly. 14-2 on the penalty count tells the story of one team that wants to play and one that doesn't. That being said I doubt very much that Borthers is happy with the Tigers attack currently.
There's a lot of high scoring games at the start of this season and most of them seem to be close. For the neutral spectator there's plenty to entertain but the issue is still actually getting the product to them. I'm sure a lot of neutrals would have enjoyed the LI Vs Bath try fest but unless you are paying for PRTV where are you going to see it?
Sarries also have an emphasis on the set piece, they certainly won some scrum pens yesterday, but they also have an off loading game set within a pretty expansive game plan, albeit its only really appeared this season. Watching Sarries also used to bore me.
It’s also not just for entertain purposes - as Sarries showed yesterday, you need to be good at all facets of the game.
Tigers scored more tries once Northampton were ground down to 13 or 14 men. At least I think so, I was pretty bored by the middle of the second half and wasn’t paying much attention.
