I just always assume that not picking Marlermis to protect his mental health, and therefore a good thing.
He's not always available, but is good enough, experienced enough, and has been I volved in enough England camps to be brought back at a moment's notice. I've no problem at with with not involving him in summer tours away, or long 6N campaigns, and no particular problem with not involving him in Autumn tours, especially if it's at hisnown request - and I suspect that BaaBaas match did him the world of good.

On top of that, of course, we also need to develop depth, which you don't do by refusing to select them.

I would assume Marler goes in the pile with Ford and Marchant as ‘capable, if required for the RWC squad’.

Presumably it was the uncertainty over his availability, but I don’t know whether Marler has changed his mind about that at all.

This is about the only game I wouldn't mind the lock at 6 though I'd prefer that lock to be Coles and Maro in the engine room with Ribbans but I suspect Eddie will go something more like the above.
Both Hill and Ribbans are tight head locks I think, even so I suspect that will be the starting XV, though would not be surprised if Youngs starts. Slade/Porter on the bench still doesn't feel right, though it worked ok at the weekend.

The current one or the RWC squad when the pressure is on might see him make a different call, but it's anyone's guess I suppose. I suppose most of the big name exclusions have made their way back in, one way or another, except for Daly.

Willis would ‘compromise our lineout significantly’

I reckon 6:2 split with Guy2try missing out

You naughty boy you!

Thanks for the article though, interesting that it doesn't say whether or not has made himself available for selection for the AIs (hints, but doesn't say, that I noticed) - and whilst he'd love to go to the RWC23, it doesn't mean that he'll be available when it rolls around.

Genuinely not a clue. You appear to have posted since without me needing to certify that you're not awful, so hopefully it was a one-off glitch that won't come back again.

Yes not ideal lock wise but they are the two biggest units so even if one isn't pushing on his favourite side it's more ballast behind the front row. I presume Tizard is a tighthead lock as well.

My late father-in-law. Lovely chap, knew his onions too, (and a lot about lock play and rugby in general)

I'll bite. Smith and Ford as FHs with Farrell purely as an IC? Or, Ford instead of Smith?

The DT portrayed it as such. Though worded in such a way that it might be referring to the Japan game

Looking at the article, it's definitely a quote taken from before the Japan game, which makes a modicum more sense when talking about replacing a third lock rather than talking about replacing Simmonds with someone three inches taller.

It's bollocks anyway. Our lineout looked the best it has done all autumn against NZ, simply because we used our heads and good movement to go up where they weren't - and that was against a side playing three locks! If you can't run a lineout with two locks and Willis and Curry as viable options, you just can't run a lineout.

I thought as much on re-reading the half a page one from back article on rugby union.

Totally agree regards NZ game. One of the real pluses

I can... kinda see some of the logic there? George is a stronger lineout thrower and Genge has been below his best this autumn, so putting him on the bench might result in a 30 minute superhuman appearance fuelled solely by anger. Could be Proudfoot adopting the Bomb Squad theory for England of bringing on stronger scrummagers in the second half? Idk.

On Slade, the three distributors thing was a major part of our last 10 minutes. It's an awful lot to pin on just 10 minutes of it working, but it did work *really* well for that time period. It's not the route I'd be going down, but I'm kinda intrigued to see if it'll work for a whole match.

ETA. If Slade to 15 means no Nowell, I am 100% here for it. If it means no May and a Steward/Nowell wing combo, we riot.
