In the mid-1960s the US & Britain conspired to save the world from the spread of communism by overthrowing Indonesia's democratically-elected leader, Sukarno, and replacing him with a military dictator, General Suharto, who proceeded to kill around half a million suspected Communist sympathizers. The names of many of the victims were provided directly by the CIA.

Finally, half a century later, comes a call for justice:

A final report on "war crimes" committed in Indonesia decades ago has called on the government to investigate and prosecute all those involved in the deaths of at least 400,000 of its own citizens.

I've had this doco for ages but I can't quite bring myself to watch it.

It's one of the west's greatest crimes along with the Congo.

Talk about killing hope.

The video itself is not so gruesome, and you can find versions with English subtitles (google the Putlocker movie site, for example); it's just the way these former genocidal maniacs are allowed to roam around like princes in their own domain and appear on TV shows and all. No accountability whatsoever, just a few crocodile tears shed by one of them toward the end.

A decade later Suharto, still backed by the US, Britain et al, invaded Timor, an Austronesian island, and killed at least as many people there. Australia and NZ continued to participate in military training drills with Indo, and NZ played a World Cup qualifier with them (without a murmur of protest) at about the same time as everyone was rioting in the streets over rugby contacts with Apartheid South Africa. The Australians produced a fairly chilling film about the murder of five of their journalists at the onset of the invasion '- The Balibo Five. They were brutally tortured to death - and Canberra did nothing.

& now it's the turn of West Papua (Iriyan Jaya), yes, with little news leaking out to the world at present. We'll no doubt be reading about this latest genocide in about 20 years time.

In came the brutal dictator Mobutu to run the nation - and serve US interests - for the next 32 years. Such is the modern history of the African continent, to a large degree
