all part of the same thing in effect- scrutiny and being second guessed probably kills their confidence, and probably they subconciously aren't as diligent as they should be. Tough(er) gig these days.

Personally, I suspect that the quality of ref.s is higher than it's ever been - they're certainly better trained, better prepared and better scrutinised (by their peers).
We just criticise them far, far more, and have better capacity to collect evidence to fit a narrative, and join online discussions of said narrative.

It's rare to watch a rugby match where the ref had a worse day at the office than 90% of the players.
It's rare to watch a rugby match where the ref isn't being criticised, often for things they got right.

Speaking of which Matt Carley was bloody excellent last night! Quality refereeing!

Personally, I suspect that the quality of ref.s is higher than it's ever been - they're certainly better trained, better prepared and better scrutinised (by their peers).
We just criticise them far, far more, and have better capacity to collect evidence to fit a narrative, and join online discussions of said narrative.

The flip side of this is that, even with slow motion video replays and the time to review them, plus angles from all over the place, you still get amazingly wrong decisions and obvious stuff missed.

I have sympathy when it's people trying to pick apart technical questions which could easily be seen either way, but none at all when stuff like Ake steaming in from the side of a ruck to neck roll Marchant gets ignored, or they struggle with basic anatomy when reviewing high shots.

I really don't understand some of the refereeing in the Fiji game. Thought Biggar clashed heads with Radrada and then thought the Welsh hooker had no arms in stopping the Fiji pick and go try. What have I misunderstood? Maybe Radrada dipped.

It was the exact technique that saw the Fiji 11 pinged for a tackle on L. Williams… and I Carley’s defence the pen on the Fiji 11 was direct from the tmo.
I think Carley has been good, otherwise.
