Ah well, 3/4 ain't bad. As long as Fiji gets a medal of some denomination - which seems all but certain now - I'll be happy.
If they're good enough to play at World Cups, why not in between?

It's Fiji v Japan in 1 semi isn't it? One of them must get silver.rowan wrote:Ah well, 3/4 ain't bad. As long as Fiji gets a medal of some denomination - which seems all but certain now - I'll be happy.

I'm delighted that at least 1 of them will medal. In fact the perfect set of results would be GBr first, Fiji/Japan 2nd/3rd. Unfortunately, on yesterdays form it could easily be SA 1st, Fiji/Japan 2nd/3rd! I think its wide open, altho SA must be favourites for gold.rowan wrote:Ah well, 3/4 ain't bad. It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I think we should see Fiji and SA, though GB might sneak in there. The loser of SA v GB will probably get bronze. It would be nice to see Japan with a medal but I think they're the least likely of the quartet They've done extremely well just to reach the semis anyway and will return home as heroes regardless whether they have any medals around their necks or not. Certainly few would have picked Japan to be in the semi finals - and in the place of the most successful exponents of the condensed code during the past few decades.

SA looking good for bronze right now. They're making a habit of finishing 3rd at major international events . . .
Anyway, so glad Fiji are assured of a medal at this, the inaugural Olympic 7s tournament. Just hope it's gold. Can you imagine the celebrations back in the islands. They'll declare it a national holiday and their unrestrained euphoria will make headlines all over the world. On form they must start favorites too. But even if they have to settle for silver, at least they've secured their countries first ever Olympic medal.

Re: Rio 7's. What team?
They actually started talking about 7s as an Olympic sport toward the end of the previous century, and it's taken over two decades to make it a reality. From the very start the image I had in my head was 7 broadly smiling Fijians on the central podium. Hopefully that dream comes true in about half an hour or so...
Canes winning Super Rugby and Fiji winning Olympic 7s in the same month? Could it happen?
