Re: Squidge
It's sad people feel the need to unload their issues by the way of vitriolic shit against other people on social media.
Hopefully it lightens his day not being on X and he can just keep doing his thing on YouTube and with the guys on For the Love of Rugby.

Twitter's turned into a cess pit anyway - I think we're going to see more and more people and institutions leaving it as more things like this happen.

Re: Squidge
All the normal people have been driven off twitter and you are just left with the pedos and fascists. It happens with all the 'free speech" places on the internet. Now nobody wants to advertise on it either.
I was reading the other day:
"The social media platform formerly known as Twitter is worth almost 80% less than two years ago when Elon Musk bought it,"
https://edition.cnn.com/2024/10/02/busi ... index.html
Incredible work from musk.

I will note this is looking more like a conversation for the Politics board. I'm happy to leave it here as being rugby adjacent, unless anyone has a strong opinion, but be aware it may get moved if it stays on the topic of, "Isn't the world a fucking mess?" and "Why are some people dogshit/Nazis/both?"

Any idea what this abuse is actually about (if that’s the right way to put it) or is it just that he’s a vaguely famous person on the internet?

South African fans getting incredibly precious that the Springboks are being discriminated against by being treated like they have flaws, added to the temerity to suggest that a French player is the GOAT when he hasn't won a single RWC and Cobus Reinach has won two in a row.Banquo wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2024 7:25 amSeems to have started when he proclaimed DuPont as the goat, followed by a pile on from mostly saffer fans.Mikey Brown wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2024 6:50 am Any idea what this abuse is actually about (if that’s the right way to put it) or is it just that he’s a vaguely famous person on the internet?
Plus a fair amount of English people angry that a young social media person is getting media work and is a major part of the Prem highlights program now.

Re: Squidge
Huh. I wouldn’t have thought that was particularly contentious. Maybe Etzebeth is in the conversation but how could anyone take a comparison of a lock and scrumhalf (or any sports personality really) so seriously?
You can’t help but find it heart warming seeing the impact Kolisi’s SA have had on their country, but the Rassie Era and his personal online behaviour does seem to have sparked something particularly unpleasant. SA seems to be leading the way in making these videos and social media posts attacking referees.
As ever I'm sure its a small portion of ‘fans’, but it’s sad that this is the norm now.

I wasn’t aware of this either. I guess the Goodey, gammon, eggchaser, patriotic types are mad at the mainstream media platforming the bloody wokes again.

Yeah, how dare somebody actually use facts and footage to add credence to their points as opposed to just making the same repetitive comments ad infinitum or unsubstantiated clickbait comments desperately hoping to bring in viewers.Mikey Brown wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2024 9:11 amI wasn’t aware of this either. Squidge's channel has been a nice break to the norm and I'm glad he's getting some mainstream recognition. Some of the petty jealousy on social media really is pathetic.

Re: Squidge
On a related note, the RFU posts sometimes pop up on my Facebook feed and one came up today with Stoically Brandnaming talking about how "great it will be to return to Allianz Stadium in front of our home fans". Clicked on the comments to enjoy the cavalcade of people commenting "Where's this stadium? I'm going to Twickenham" (wonder if Allianz have built in this kind of backlash and expect to get a long-term return, cause it doesn't appear to be doing great for their branding right now), only to find a small group of people going, "Yeah, and while we're on this topic it will always be England Saxons not A!"
...
I mean, I know it's probably a Daily Mail reader who wasn't around pre 2006 and has come to the conclusion that the change has happened because of wokery and erasing the ethnicity of pure Saxons, but I'm quite amused that a stupid marketing rebrand that everyone hated (and that I've been steadfastly ignoring and referring to them as England A over the last 18 years anyway) has now become someone's hill to die on.

Re: Squidge
I think it all started when the 2023 RWC hosting was awarded to France. There was no doubt that it should've gone to South Africa on most metrics and the IRB recommendation was for SA, but when the vote was called, France got it because they offered a higher bond. It led to a lot of resentment and a feeling that World Rugby was Eurocentric (or anti-African, for a lot of people) and that things were stacked against them and no-one wanted SA to succeed.Danno wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2024 6:10 amSA rugby twitter is fucking rancid, when it piles on, it piles onMikey Brown wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2024 9:08 am Huh. Rassie fed that persecution complex, plus his behaviour turned a lot of neutrals against SA, which fed into the belief that "everyone's against us', and now it just seems to be a culture amongst the fans of being persecuted and discriminated against, with every even slightly off refereeing decision being presented as evidence that the World Rugby cabal is plotting the downfall of the Springboks.
I don't know how, or even if, it's recoverable.

That all makes sense. Notwithstanding the massive elephant in the room against the idea of persecution being two world cups in a fucking row.
I particularly detest Rassie, he's almost the Trump of coaches off field, and a lot of his on field tactics (however effective) are really sour.

Ah, but you see the two world cups are **proof** that they're discriminated against. They won two RWCs in a row, despite everything being rigged against them and every decision being biased to the opposition, and yet they're not being recognised as the greatest team ever to play the game, like NZ were in 2015. Even worse, "they" now have the temerity to have Ireland top of the rankings and some French guy being proclaimed as GOAT - how many world cups have those losers won, huh?Danno wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2024 10:16 am That all makes sense. It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
