Murley was a lot more active in other elements of his game earlier on, when breaking through. But I feel like around the 21/22 season he started to focus on scoring more tries, on being quicker, and being more of a traditional winger, while still retaining the elements that made him stand out as a youngster. He did well on that score. His try record before then was...like Nowell. Since then, it's on a different level.Banquo wrote: ↑Mon Jul 14, 2025 10:45 pmYeah sorry didn’t spot it. Fair enough on looking for work, but Nowell was always around breakdowns etc etc. not just popping up somewhere in the backsMikey Brown wrote: ↑Mon Jul 14, 2025 7:30 pmI can’t tell if you’re questioning me saying he is ‘much, much faster’ or just didn’t see it.
Presumably he’s under similar instructions to Muir in this series for England, but as Stom says he’s a constant threat coming off his wing for Quins as well as doing the classic counter-attack/finisher stuff you want from your fast guys.
I think Nowell sometimes gets a bit of a bad rap, for what’s it’s worth, but his lack of top end pace meant he often couldn’t capitalise on that footwork and physicality, as well as being a pretty ropey 1-on-1 defender.
you guys know better than me, but it’s not a comparison that would have occurred to me. Nowell also played 13 and 15 a bit, does Murley have that in his locker out of interest?

Re: Argentina tour
Fair enough. I'd guess that Nowell's 'assists' were way up but I assume stats for that are not available. Whatever, both were very useful club players in successful sides. Is it fair to suggest that Quins, over a period, score(d) far more conventional winger tries than Exeter did during Nowell's time there? I'm not sure how you'd measure overall contributions within teams.Stom wrote: ↑Tue Jul 15, 2025 9:15 amYou just can't say that, though...Oakboy wrote: ↑Tue Jul 15, 2025 8:11 am I think Nowell had less competition than Murley making comparisons debatable. Arguably, Nowell was always in our top three wingers. Murley is not at that level and may not get the chance to be compared in international terms. In terms of club effectiveness they are on a par. Style-wise, there are similarities and differences. Defenders have found both hard to mark.
Murley has scored a butt load more tries than Nowell in fewer games. He's been top try scorer.
Nowell was a great player, but he was never a top finisher. Murley is. Along with the other elements.

Would include CCS in place of:Stom wrote: ↑Sun Jul 13, 2025 7:10 pmSeems a good shout.Which Tyler wrote: ↑Sun Jul 13, 2025 4:55 pm I'm not seeing the fuss over Hendy TBH, same with Hodge. Good going forwards, but there's more to FB play than that. They're young, they'll develop, but I'm personally not interested in them until they have.
One name I would throw out at FB (complete with proviso) is that if DeGlanville keeps up his form from this year, he could very easily be getting the starts ahead of Carreras. Is also very much the same playmaking style of FB as Furbank in terms of not changing the gameplan due to injury.
Marcus is getting more time at 15, but if anything he's getting worse there...and that may just be a form thing...but I just feel like he's better suited to 10.
What does the first team squad look like after this tour? As I feel like a few of these guys have played themselves very much into the squad, and it'll be interesting to see how we progress. With the Lions players, are we now looking at:
Genge, Baxter, Rodd
George, LCD, ?
Stuart, Heyes, AOF
Itoje, Ewels
Chessum, Martin, Coles
TCurry, BCurry, Pepper
Underhill, Pollock
Willis, Earl
Mitchell, JvP, Spencer
Ford, Smith, Smith
Freeman, Murley, Muir
Atkinson, Dingwall, ?
Slade, Lawrence, ?
Roebuck, IFW
Furbank, ?
Pack is looking good. Backs...still need some work, but some holes filled.
Ewels at 4
Martin at 5
B Curry at 6
and add alongside Willis at 8
Would also move Pollock from 7 to 6
B Curry and Pepper from 6 to 7
Earl from 8 to 7 and backup 12 ( though now happy to see him get the nod at 8 over Conan for Lions tests so long as Pollock and Morgan are also starting as that was some unit in terms of all out pace and fetching).
and also note that Underhill could play 6 as easily as 7
