Deletion of old threads

Post by Puja »

You may've noticed a couple of issues with the board's performance from time to time. Possibly.

Given the AIs are coming up and people will want the board to be functional, I'm looking at options to fix that, among which is reducing the size of the database. Next week I'm going to go through and remove all threads whose last post was >3 years ago. If you have anything that you particularly want to preserve, this is your official warning to go a-backing up.

For a couple of the forums, I felt comfortable picking out threads to keep and blatting the rest (sorry EMB, I decided for you), but for the boards that I don't really frequent, I thought it was better to let all of you decide for yourselves.

Is there any special way of backing up or do you just mean copy and paste?

Does the size of individual threads cause any problems? On the SMB there are two active threads started in 2016, one of 90 pages and one of 191 pages.

I have been printing to pdf for things that I want to keep. I'm open to suggestions if anyone knows of a better way though.

The size will make a difference - if you can bear to start new threads and restart the legacy, then it probably wouldn't hurt to do that, but I suspect it's probably not going to be the thing that wrecks the board if you do want to keep them.

To be honest, I wouldn't comolain if you deleted every thread that hasn't had a post on it in over a year. While in theory it'd be nice to be able to look back, I'm not sure I'd ever do it.

Definitely been a bit hit or miss getting onto the site recently.

I looked at the first post in the Scots Abroad thread. It’s so old Chris Cusiter and Ally Hogg were still playing when it started. :o Since I have basically taken over that thread I’ll start a new one.

If you'd like, I can split it off, so that the last page or two are kept as a new thread and the rest of it goes in the bin? Or you can start a new one - whatever's easiest.

I’d say keep the last two pages which is this season and bin the rest. Maybe wait a couple of days to see if anyone objects.

We don't even have a 2nd page of threads on the Imb, I'd say you could go full apocalypse now in there

Really? Is there a particular reason? I'm not a regular in there, so I don't know if any of them are significant.

Not significant but I'd get a book or tv recommendation in there before I'd go to good reads or some such

That said I bet no one has looked at page 4 or 5 in a long time

Are you planning to do anything to Last Film Watched, or Good Reads, or Good TV Shows? They're a pretty good repository of reviews. I'd vote for them to be left alone.

But if not, can you give me warning before they are trimmed?
