£2,000 for punching a player

Post by stud muffin »

Rugby player ordered to pay £2,000 compensation for punching opponent in face.
Judge Walters sentenced the defendant to 10 months in prison, suspended for two years

We've all been on the receiving end of a punch during a game, some of us have thrown our fair share as well (not me of course!).

My rugby days are well over, but let the red mist descend on you at your peril.

It's rare, very rare, but I do recall a rugby player being arrested post match for assault. The offender had punched and kicked seven bells out of the victim, amazingly not seen by the ref, which resulted in a hospital trip. I don't recall anyone arguing too much at the police involvement, there was a feeling that the offender had gone too far.

I've been involved in plenty of argy bargy on the field, but if you cause someone that much damage through a deliberately violent act,I don't think you can complain if the law gets involved.

Yeah, are we talking a one-off punch after foul play, or a full-on McRae/Clarke level of thuggery?

Where were his teammates, can't have been a popular fella for them to stand around watching him get battered.

There is also of course the case of Dai Bishop when he broke Chris Jarman's jaw, suspended sentance and an 11 month ban.

He dropped the guy from behind while he was jogging to a breakdown. So a cowardly act rather than a punch up. I believe he was banned for 8 weeks by the WRU, as they banned him as he "probably did it" since the court case , apparently it has been upgraded to 8 months.

Ho hello by the way, saw the forum and thought id give it a spin :)

Welcome - but you won't get far with a username like that.
Unless it's a lie, of course.

There may be a element of irony attached to it :)
