All the Mad Maxes. As the consensus generally goes 1 was very good, 2 was very good, 3 awful and 4 (the new one?) surprisingly good in a way.

The Falling. Terrible. Don't ask why I watched it.

Went to see Bourne a couple of weeks back
A jolly jaunt if you like that sort of thing, which I do
Plenty of action, fight scenes, car chases, tension etc
Not sure if they are lining up for another but the format is starting to get a bit weary ie. he's pissed off with someone in the CIA and therefore he comes out of hiding to fight it off again.
I'd give it a solid 7/10 just because I like that sort of film and will happily watch the movie another 15 times when it starts to show on TV

I thought pretty much the same.

Saying that I'll probably go and see the next one and say the same thing.

Not the last, but I was reminded of this recently, which I watched a few years ago while studying French here in Istanbul (I got free lessons through my job). This film was actually banned in France until quite recently:

Hush, a Netflix-exclusive thriller about a deaf woman who finds herself in a battle of wits against a murderous intruder.

Definitely worth checking out as an exemplar on how so much can be achieved with so little to work with.

Watched 'Sometimes in April tonight,' about the Rwandan genocide, a little more graphic than 'Hotel Rwanda' but somehow didn't have quite the same impact. Certainly watchable though.



I've been reading about the new film 'A Brilliant Genocide,' how US forces were sent to Uganda in 2012, ostensibly to hunt down notorious warlord Joseph Kony (who is still alive somewhere, btw), but really in support of dictator Yoweri Museveni, who was himself carrying out a genocide in the Acholi region of northern Uganda. Not sure if it's been released yet, but that's one to look out for.

Mesrine ~ Killer Instinct .

Out since 2009 but if you haven't seen it, worth a look . True story about a well known French bank robber/murderer with Vincent Cassells in lead role . Earthy & violent about a man who always seemed one step of the police in the many countries he commited crime . Cassells won all sorts of nominations and is truly watchable , some good tension build up and action scenes and a brilliant climax .

A treat if you've not seen it before .

'The Epic of Everest (Chomolungma)' was on bbc4 tonight.
The BFI have restored the film from the Mallory+Irvine attempt. It's well worth a look.

Gone Girl.

One of those where you stick with it because you can see how it could be good, but overrall absolutely terrible. Great music, terrible acting, terrible acript, not a single character's motivations made any sense. Is this what Fincher is like now?

Gone Girl.
One of those where you stick with it because you can see how it could be good, but overrall absolutely terrible. Great music, terrible acting, terrible acript, not a single character's motivations made any sense. Is this what Fincher is like now?

There's a space movie with Charles Dance and Dennis Hopper. It's totally awful,....but Charles Dances's death scene is a triumph of acting.

Deepwater Horizon - I don't know much about the incident so can imagine they've taken a few liberties but can also fully believe the BP folk pushing hard to get the money flowing. Few brave folk on board nevertheless.

Magnificent 7 - decent fun. Been just the one year since I watched the original so can't really compare.
