Mo's double double will be up there, but it is hard to see past Murray

I doubt there had been a stronger favourite for a while now. Fair enough too I think. Wimbledon, Olympic and world tour champion in a final that decided the number 1 ranking. Came through pretty much every test this year, oh and the back end of last year he lead gb to the Davis cup.

Oh come on, surely there's a member of the royal family who got a 4th at the olympics in the equestrian events?

I think that they should just stop all the hubris and ballix right now and offer it to the O'Donavan brothers.

Seeing as they don't qualify, the Brownlee brothers are going to step in for them. They're practising their deedlee-dee now, though god knows what that'll sound like with a Bradford accent.

It's at the 'Genting Arena' this year - thought it might be somewhere in the North East but cuddnae find it on the map..turns out it's actually at the NEC in Birmingham.
That means we'll be faced with plenty of gooey chats & glowing reminiscences from local sporting legends like Nigel Mansell, Ann Jones and Pongo Waring..

Was just about to start a thread about this.

Incredible number of Candidates.

Mo - won't get it, too black, too foreign.
Laura Trott - won't get it too female.
Adam Peaty - won't get it. Not well enough known.
Jason Kenny - won't get it too dull.
Stanning and Glover - won't get it as will divide votes and too female and to much of a minority sport.
Hannah Cockroft - won't get it. Too paralympian. Too female.
Anthony Joshua- won't get it as everyone knows boxing is a mess.

It will be Murray. he deserves it. But then so do so many other people. we're in a really really good place.

My hope:

The list is exceptional except Vardy and Bale. I'm pleasantly surprised to see so many paralympians, and ashamed I forgot Kadeema Cox who would be my choice.

Surprised there's no Froome!

Is road cycling tarnished or has the TdF become too easy???

Too many good other options and no one's going to care that he's not there.

I do when Vardy and to a lesser extent Bale are on there. I'd argue that Itoje has achieved more this year. Not that I'd have him on it, either.

More than Vardy certainly. More than Bale, probably not and I can think of lots of people who deserve to be there but aren't, including Carl Franpton and Bethany Firth and Hannah Cockroft who I'd have well ahead of Froome.

I'm suprised Jessica Ennis-Hill isn't on the list having won Olympic silver and the World Championships in the same year.

Um, aren't they different years, i.e. 2015 and 2016?

She's just been awarded the 2011 title by CAS as the original gold medalist was a cheating druggie.
