"Bots and trolls out in force"

It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Not sure what I'm looking at there Donny, but as a side note, am I really reading that the CIA, without a hint of irony, are giving out about a foreign power interfering with an election?

You are yes. Just one of a huge number of amusing things about this situation.

Huge = couple.

:lol:

How about this open letters to the Guardian:

How can you run news items and comment on false news (A challenge to Facebook’s reach and power is overdue, 9 December), while the front page of the very same edition bears a false photo of the US president-elect cavorting with, apparently, Ku Klux Klan members? Donald Trump may or not be a supporter of this organisation and they in turn may or may not be supporters of his. But the clear message of the photo, without any prominent indication that it is false, presents unambiguous positive answers to these implied questions.

Other examples of fake news include the official versions of events in relation to Orgreave, Westland, and Hillsborough; the alleged murder of 100,000 military age males in Kosovo; the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and their capacity for deployment within 45 minutes; Saddam Hussein’s feeding of people into a giant paper shredder, and his attempt to obtain uranium from Niger; an imminent genocide in Benghazi; Gaddafi’s feeding of Viagra to his soldiers in order to encourage mass rape, and his intention to flee to Venezuela; an Iranian nuclear weapons programme. In every case, that was fake news.

Another view here:

I have watched incredulous as the CIA’s blatant lie has grown and grown as a media story – blatant because the CIA has made no attempt whatsoever to substantiate it. There is no Russian involvement in the leaks of emails showing Clinton’s corruption. Yes this rubbish has been the lead today in the Washington Post in the US and the Guardian here, and was the lead item on the BBC main news. I suspect it is leading the American broadcasts also.

SO fake news includes anything that the author of the comment thinks is nonsense, regardless of evidence?

The problem with the idiot Blair effectively misleading parliament is that once revealed, credibility is destroyed. WHy people assume that RT and the Russian Government (pretty much the same thing) or other 'alternative' new channels are more reliable is a bit mystifying mind.

Also a good account of it:

'But why would anyone trust the CIA or the White House on anything? We’re talking about an agency and a Executive Branch that between them are known to have lied (during the GW Bush years) about anthrax labs in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, lied about what were aluminum tubes imported to make irrigation equipment being evidence of missile-building, lied about Ira’s links to Al Qaeda, and (during the Obama years) lied about Syria’s government using Sarin gas on its own people in Damascus, lied about the details of the killing of Osama Bin Laden, lied about the role of a murderous CIA agent captured by Pakistani police while posing as a US consular employee, lied about the extent of National Security Agency Spying both at home and abroad, and lied about Russia invading Ukraine and shooting down a civilian Malaysian jumbo jet.'
