French Elections
Any picks for the French elections? National Front candidate Marine Le Pen is shaping up as the favourite, now that right-wing hardliner Francois Fillon has become embroiled in a financial scandal involving his wife, who allegedly received 65,000 euros over 15 years for a fake job. Fillon is also accused of using political funds to hire his own offspring. Actually, this is not a crime in France, Fillon has apologized, but claims he was the victim of dirty tricks and has refused to pull out of the race. Nonethless, the scandal will have effected public confidence in him. The elections will be held over two rounds in April and May. Before the scandal Fillon was probably the favourite, but now it looks as though it might come down to Le Pen or Centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron, the previous Finance Minister under President Francois Hollande who is said to have direct ties to the Rothschild family. An outside chance may be left wing candidate Benoit Hamon, who surprisingly won the Socialist Party nomination. The Socialists are currently in power, though Hollande has not sought re-election following five years in office. My money would be on Le Pen at this stage, though polls are indicating she may not have sufficient national support. Comparisons have been made to US president Donald Trump, so following Brexit and the shock result of the American elections, this would certainly continue the prevalent anti-globalization trend.
If they're good enough to play at World Cups, why not in between?

We had a small discussion on this a few Months ago :

I explained why Marine LePen won't be elected. BTW she owes 300 000 to the EU Parliement and has a few skeletons in her closet. Not speaking about the background racism in her party which disgusts most people. What could you expect from a party created by ex SS-soldiers, collaborators and veterans from Algeria?
Things have evolved a bit: Juppe (the more central right winger/Chirac ally) lost heavely in the parties election as did Sarkozy. Fillon a countryside Bourgeois won, holding the high moral ground... blablabla... hinting a lot to his Catholic background (wouldn't have dared do that if he was Muslim). His current fall from grace is wonderful to see.
Macron is trying to be seen as not being part of the system by ... taking the middle ground. He has been trained in the same School (l'ENA) as most French Politicians, has worked with the Rotschild, hangs around the same crowd... The media love him, I've not met many French who do...
Benoit Hamon is very left leaning and left Hollande's govenment as he rebuked the ideals upon which he was elected (giving Hamon a lot of street cred). He can probably count on the support of Melenchon (extreme left) but that has yet to be done.

Cheers Adder, was looking at news from the French election the other day, thinking to myself there is no fucking way you lot would elect someone like LePen, then again... I said something similar about the Indy ref... and Brexit... and Trump.Adder wrote:We had a small discussion on this a few Months ago :

There would have to be a very small turnout for Mrs LePen to be elected. That could probably happen if Hamon (left wing ) goes through to the next round, against Marine LePen. In this case the Right Wing voters may be tempted not to vote at all, or vote for her.

Yes, the explanation was appreciated, Adder. This is certainly not my field of expertise and obviously I would have simply contributed to the original thread if I'd been aware of it. Anyway, one of the news feeds I have linked to my Facebook account is RFI - which I both read and listen to every morning for French practice - and obviously the elections are the main story right now. So who would your pick be? Is Fillon still a chance? Interesting how many parallels there are here to the US elections, except you have more parties, obviously...
If they're good enough to play at World Cups, why not in between?

It's a bit crazy at the moment and things will settle in as we get closer. Do you know Macron still doesn't have a program? crazy!!! A strong National and international interest after theincredible/horrendous results in the UK and US, means that the media are going to milk every non story linked to the election in the next few Months.rowan wrote:Yes, the explanation was appreciated, Adder. Honestly I could get my father to vote for me(as I am in Bulgaria), but he probably won't bother and I can't see who I would vote for.
If I had to be placed on a Political map I am left leaning but am not a bif fan of the PS. My local parliementarian is Mr Cambadelis and I hate everything he stands for. He is leading the Partie Socialiste at the moment. Benoit Hamon is a bit of fresh hair from the "Elephants" of the Partie, but will probably fall short. I usually vote for a small candidate in the first round and vote against one or the other candidates in the second.
I support the idea of a New constitution and hate the Copinage/Cronysm of the French "elite". The Fillon Scandale is thus both terrible and delightful to witness.
I think Fillon is toast and that in the next couple of weeks he will resign. He might get the votes from his party members but he is totally unelectable for the vast Majority. Jupé will probably come back up, but he is no white dove himself. Bayrou(centrist) might put forward his name as well and make that fight in the centre, ever so difficult.

Sounds like a lottery! I still think LePen will win it, but hope I am proved wrong.

Re: French Elections
Not related to the elections, but this just happened
An explosion has erupted at EDF’s Flamanville nuclear power plant in northern France. At least five people suffered light injuries in the blast.
EDF has confirmed that one reactor has been taken offline adding there is no nuclear risk.
“It is a significant technical event, but it’s not a nuclear accident,” a representative of the local prefecture said, adding that the accident occurred outside of the ‘nuclear zone’.

Emmanuel Macron looks the deal - pro-EU, which might just save the bloc itself, doesn't hold far right views on immigration as his main rivals do, while he speaks in terms of change and reforms.

- Melenchon reprensent a mix of communist and lefter leaning socialists. He lives in the Past, and has a massive Ego, his best position is in opposition. (10% in polls 1rst round )
Hamon, is on the left wing of Socialist Party and left Hollande Government. Supports universal revenue can't see him doing Much. A bit like Corbyn. The more right winged elements of the socialist Party have switched to Macron. (15% in polls)
Macron, has taken over the middle ground, says the odd sensationalist word to get attention from the Media. (but he is made from the French System)
(23-25% in Polls)
Fillon Catholic conservative , thacherite ... corrupt :p (21% in Polls)
MLP.. Fascist little rich girl, who as inherited her fathers empire of crap. looks more presentable as a woman, europhobe, racist, islamophobe... and has stolen 300 000 Eur from EU.(25- 28% in Polls)

It's a bit of a hard choice. Which is why MLP is so popular.

What do you expect she would do ? We don't really have liberals in France as our Left is more authoritarian than in the English speaking world. Liberalisme is actually the French word for Capitalism in French politics and is a right wing current.Lord Lucan wrote:France and Europe needs a Le Pen victory as much as it needed the D-Day landings in 1944, if France gets another liberal leader, France and Europe is headed for Armageddon.

That won't help Fillon one bit, but i think most people who follow Bayrou were intending to follow Macron anyway. Bayrou is also a centrist, although right leaning. He must not have appreciated Fillon's conservatism and now-visible corruptibility.rowan wrote:The plot thickens:
