So whats your XV for us to face England?

Post by Flying Scarlet »

I know its over a week away but what changes, if any, would you make for the match a week Saturday?

If Charteris is fit, do you put him back in place of Bradley who had a good game against the French?

Would you bring Tipuric in for Lydiate, or did Lydiate do enough to keep his jersey?

I think Cuthbert had a good enough game against France to warrant staying put, didn't do much attacking wise but had a good game defensively.

I'd like to see something more than Preistland & Anscombe on the bench, whether it be Tom James coming onto the bench or anyone else, just something more than 2 fly halves...

Charteris needs to play if fit for his maul defensive qualities, Lydiate needs to play to nullify some of Vunipola's carrying, I'm not bothered either way by Cuthbert or James.

What I would like to see is a different bench backs wise, I'm not buying into Anscombe at 15 (see his turnstile impression v Scotland), Hallam Amos should bench for me.

This, for me.
Although, Lydiate does seem to be less effective the last couple of games he's played. His trademark appears to be on the verge of being outlawed, so there's a question mark over his usefulness in the team in my opinion.
I do think his all round game has improved since coming to the Ospreys, but he seems a bit off the pace.

How's Moriarty doing at the mo?

Bradley's carrying is better, but Charteris just for the mauls.

Wouldn't change much else from the French game. Apart from playing a lot better, with more accuracy and praps a few less kicks to nothing.

Agree, can't see the point of Anscombe.
Gerald Davies, what was he doing there?!

Spot on, though I'd maybe have Amos starting, instead of Cuthbert.

Lydiate has to start to keep their big ball carriers in check, Tips on the bench to make an impression when the game opens up. Id bring back Charteris as well with Bradley on the bench (purely a tactical decision, I though Bradley went well last time out). Otherwise, the starting 15 is no change. The bench needs some thought though. The forwards replacements are fine and all add some genuine impact. Id prefer Webb to Lloyd Williams (don't thin Webb will start yet, Davies has the shirt). Also, just one out of Priestland and Anscombe IMO. I think Priestland has looked reasonable assured in his short cameos at fly half, Id stick with him. Id prefer someone else who can genuinely change a game. Amos is a decent replacement, or Morgan. I suspect Morgan has no chance given how tight this game will be and any perception that he is a defensive liability.

It had momentarily slipped my mind that Treisnt a Nipper fan.

It's a big risk playing him, but I don't see the point in his being in the squad if he isn't used. Either he is big enough and thus can have a part to play, even if as a super sub. Of he isn't and that squad place could be used for someone else.

I can't see any value in persisting with Anscombe. He's added nothing and, worryingly, he has introduce an element of weakness in an otherwise strong defence. If he were picked to go into the 10 slot, I'd think, "Okay, not the best option, but he can do a job", at 15 he is actually a liability. I'd also tell Foxy to stop kicking good ball away and limit Biggar to one up and under all game. Tom James over Cuthbert, Clart over Bradley, the Lydinator over Tips, and I'd put Matthew Morgan on the bench in place of Anscombe as a utility back.

I'm concerned that Biggar kicks too much and we have become reliant on his kick chase as our main attacking weapon. Against a ponderous English back row, a running fly half could have a field day.

Not sure what you mean, England have a blitz defence system predominantly, so not really ponderous as you put it.

It would be nice for Biggar to take it to the defence line a bit more, the difference between a flat attacking 10 and him is plain to see when you look at Sam Davies take the ball up.

I got some abuse off her and his brother this morning so I have decided to sub him on for Lydiate at 6.

Im referring to Haskell who isn't a natural open side and didn't put much, if any, real pressure on Sexton last weekend.

Clever selection - it's got a lot of x-factor, and yet the conservative choice of Lydiate brings balance to the whole team. However, I fear that Gatland would want to shoehorn Warburton into this team somewhere... so not an entirely realistic 23.

That could be because Sexton almost always passes to the 12 early and loops around behind him, he rarely takes the ball to the attacking line.

But I would argue that Sexton had far more freedom to run last weekend because he didn't have an open side hunting him down.

I think you are assuming that most phase play will be from set piece.

Set piece or not, the fly half should be feeling like the open sides about to clobber him. Haskell doesn't have that in his game. What he can do is pressure the game in tighter confines so is running straight into English defenders will probably suit him all day long.

I have no idea where your getting this idea from or are you trying to tell me that in open field phase play the openside is always lined up against the 10?
