Greatest, dead, white guitarist
I was listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan over a few beers with some mates which got us discussing who the best dead, white, guitarist is. SRV remains my pick, but George Harrison is up there.
What do you chaps reckon?
(We've already made the Keef Richards joke)

Re: Greatest, dead, white guitarist
SRV is certainly a contender. His playing was exemplary, if derivative (whose isn't?). For my money it's a toss up between Duane Allman, Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore, Roy Buchanan, Frank Zappa and Randy Rhoads. If pushed I would say Rory. Jimi agrees.

Re: Greatest, dead, white guitarist
Is Gary Moore dead? He's at least as derivative as SRV.
Duane Allman is one I didn't think off - well before my time and quite a brief career. I've never really got Zappa, but the rest of your list will dominate my Spotify playlist for a bit.

You think I'd notice something like that.
At least we've still got good old Lemmy with us, right?

I believe he's working with Cozy Powell and David Bowie these days.Lizard wrote:You think I'd notice something like that.

See now we're getting into greatest dead white guys band line up territory.
Can we take a leaf from the old SA Union's book and declare Farrokh Bulsara an honorary white so he can be the front man?

Oh aye. He was a good 'un. As was Paul Kossoff. Peter lives in Bethnal Green these days, I believe. Paul is deed.

He was still touring up until a couple of years ago. He had a short break in the eighties, nineties and early two thousands, to get his shit together, but found Great Yarmouth a small pond, hence the move to the East End.Billyfish wrote:Ha! George Formby.
Frank Zappa could play a bit. Legacy...George Harrison I'd say, or even Mick Ronson.

Re: Greatest, dead, white guitarist
although better known as a vocalist and frontman, Steve Marriott was good enough to make it into the Stones purely as a guitarist. till Mick heard him sing and vetoed it, for fear of being upstaged.

Some great calls here especially Django, SRV, Gary Moore et al but I'll go rogue and post a vote for one of my fave (then) radical technical players, Shawn Lane.
Utterly superb.

Plus 1 for that. He must be the fastest player I've ever seen. I remember Black Oak Arkansas and actually went to see them, but I don't remember this guy. Poor fellah, he was caught between a rock and a hard place with his psoriasis and arthritis.Parsifal wrote:Some great calls here especially Django, SRV, Gary Moore et al but I'll go rogue and post a vote for one of my fave (then) radical technical players, Shawn Lane.

I'd like to second George Formby. What a fabulous entertainer.
I'd also like to mention Jeff Healey as a contender.

Good call with JH. He was better than SRV IMO.Argus wrote:I'd like to second George Formby. What a fabulous entertainer.

Re: Greatest, dead, white guitarist
As Hammy said, a very good call. Blinded by cancer as a child and killed by it later in life, he was right up there as a player. Only 41 when he died - what a tragic loss. RIP, Jeff.Argus wrote:

George Formby all the way.
Especially as Peter Green isn't deid yet.
