Revoking British citizenship

Post by Zhivago »

How do we feel about this?

I can understand it with dual-nationals who have been tried by a court and found guilty.

But it seems arbitrary and unjust fundamentally in the case of Assad's British-born wife. If they wish to, then I believe there should be the requirement to try her for some crime! And if she's found guilty then fair enough.

What's the opinion of the board?

I'm a little surprised that you of all people think that losing British Citizenship would be any hardship..

To me, it depends n how she gained it. If it was granted through naturalisation, then I see no problem with a Government revoking it, if it was acquired by right that would be a different matter.

1) British born
2) Why do you think I'm anti-British? I can assure you that I am 100 times more patriotic than you. Don't confuse it with nationalism. I demand high standards of my country.

BAZ! Patriotism isn't measured in foreigners killed for Queen and country, you know. Or for that matter the degree to which one supports such slaughter.

1. If she's British born, they shouldn't be able to take it away so easily. Mind you, the right to Citizenship through accident of birth is not a very strong one and is not recognised by all that many countries. Even in the UK it is now a limited right.

2. Did you not talk about giving up your British Citizenship ? Maybe I'm confusing you with some other rambling moonhowler. As for being 100 times more patriotic than me, you may well be, I'm not desperately patriotic it all and have a rather jaundiced view of patriotism. I would, however, be interested in seeing your workings behind such an exact calculation.

1. I'm proud that as a country we think of those born on our soil as Brits. It's not like that here in NL and it's very weird to me. They even have words that are essentially describing the purity of someone (allochtoon & autochtoon). Their nationality law is based on jus sanguinis, as opposed to jus soli.

2. Obviously it's not so much calculated, rather passionately stated. There's something about living abroad that throws your own culture and national identity into sharp contrast and for me at least makes me feel more British than ever. A true patriot demands high standards of his nation.

I've lived in Germany (3yrs), Switzerland (5years) and the USA (2yrs). I found the differences in culture and attitudes fascinating and enjoyable, and I would happily move back to two out of those countries tomorrow. But living there didn't make me more of a British patriot, indeed quite the reverse. There's nothing special about being British.

Is it just me, or is the feeling of being patriotic not mutually exclusive with the feeling that your country is a shambles?

It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Think you should have good reason to be proud of your country. Delusion is never healthy.

No delusion isn't healthy.

I think Stones' point about patriotism and there being nothing special about Britain could be that being proud of where you're from actually says nothing about where you're from.

I could have been born and raised in France, Germany, Canada, Ireland, etc etc, and be the same person I am now but proud of being from France or Germany or Canada or Ireland or etc etc.

It may say something about me, but its no reflection really on the place I'm from.

I probably haven't explained that well at all and I don't know if its what he meant, but I agree with Stones. I'm not patriotic and am frankly a little confused by patriotism, in that I cant really wrap my head around what patriotic sentiment is trying to say.

When is this period of time when our country was more open and accepting than it is now?

You think the UK has changed in the last 9 years that much?

We've had a lot of pressure on public finances, but the underling levels of acceptance I'd contend have never been higher.

My ledger is so sublimely balanced it makes Nadia Comaneci at the height of her gymnastic powers appear like Baz with 4 pints of crème de mènthe frappè and a good hoofing at the feet of a dozen Dundee hoores upon him!

I was born one and still I fecking hate what the Brits have become. It's all an accident of birth but honestly, I'd rather be Somali!

I can only compare since 2013 as that's when i left. From my perspective it seems that our politics is constantly a farce, or country is constantly in crisis, and the decay of the union is quickening. The EU will outlast the UK.

How can one be proud of such a situation. I need to be careful for the next bit... Hitler was clearly very patriotic, but he had utter despair for the state of his nation (in the beginning). Extreme example, but my point is that you do not have to be constantly unconditionally proud to be patriotic, you just need the desire to be able to be proud.
