The Vietnam War.

Post by Lord Lucan »

Was this really an unwinnable war? or were the Americans doomed to lose the war all along by political interference?
What if the gloves were allowed to come off completely, and the US unleashed their full military might, where nothing was out of bounds, US troops could roll right up to the Chinese border and everywhere in between in Vietnam?
Had the Americans been allowed to conduct total war along the lines of the Barbarossa invasion of Russia by Hitler and his Huns, and be every bit as merciless and ruthless as the Nazis were, could they have won? Forget about what China might or might not do for now.
I think they would win such a war.

To what end? Vietnam "fell" and the world still turns. You're asking the wrong question.

Unwinnable war - yes.
Winnable with use of nuclear weapons and big tricking guns - no.

Try reading into the corruption of the South Vietnamese government to recognise how unpopular it was. The US committed almost half a million troops to the war, thats a pretty significant effort, including carpet bombing Hanoi. The reason they lost is that the South was falling apart. Counter insurgency operations need more than just military force.
