2024 Oympics - Paris or LA?

Post by rowan »

Bit of a shame. The US & France have probably hosted more major international sports events than other other two countries on the planet. Budapest is a nice city, too, spread out either side of the Danube River with wide streets and plenty of parks.

Budapest has become the latest city to bow out of contention to host the 2024 Summer Olympics, leaving Los Angeles and Paris as the only candidates bidding to stage the Games.

The Hungarian city joined Rome and Hamburg in exiting the 2024 race after lukewarm public support doomed the bid. According to local media outlets, the official reasoning behind the pullout was the potential "loss of prestige" the city would suffer if its underdog bid didn't emerge as the winner.

Hopefully Paris. Long overdue.

Should be Paris just on the length of time since either city hosted

Paris 1924 = 100yrs
Los Angeles 1984 = 40yrs

Paris is apparently set to spend billions on suburban development. Not sure it'll all be in place by 2024, however.

LA was an awful Olympics too, and not just because of the Eastern European boycott. I actually thought Paris had hosted it since 1924, but I must have been thinking of the World Cup or Euros or something. So if they haven't had it since 1924 I think they'll be a shoo-in for 2024.

I think that the Main arguement for Paris is that they will need very little infrastructure... well that is how they are selling in France and the French are not very keen on investing in it.

Paris shewerly...US should stop being boring and present a different city to their '84 or '96 mediocricity affairs...anyhoo Fra is a great summer holiday destination: with some events being spread around the country it would be a fine thing
for those poppin' over. :)

I agree that Istanbul is overdue to host a major sports event with so many improvements to infrastructure taking place, especially the public transportation systems. So why didn't they bid for the 2024 Olympics :?:

It's official - Paris has got it after LA stepped aside to focus on 2028:

Los Angeles has agreed to step aside for four years in its pursuit of staging the Olympics the world’s largest sporting event, handing Paris the 2024 games. https://www.ft.com/content/ba885222-762 ... a9d1bc9691

Only just saw this. So LA has the 2028 Games. Fair enough, I suppose. 7s has been confirmed thru 2024, I understand, but given its success last year I think Olympic rugby may be here to stay this time. Inshallah!

Los Angeles’ roller coaster campaign to host the Olympics for a third time — an effort marked by early defeat and last-second negotiations — reached a conclusion Wednesday when the city was formally awarded the 2028 Summer Games.

International Olympic Committee members voted their approval with a show of hands at a session in Lima, Peru, ending an unusual bid competition that resulted in two winners, with Paris simultaneously awarded the 2024 Games.
