I was watching a pro 12 match about a month back.... I heard distinctly the comment ' ahh com'on Ref! you cnut!' by one of the player's, the Ref response was to warn the team captain. something of nothing, I haven't seen S. Lee complaining so what's the issue other than the usual bandwagon of PC numpties being offended for an insult to somebody else who doesn't seem to care. I'm pretty sure Lee's response could have been ' yeah, I'm a gyppo. so what, at least I haven't got a stupid fuckwit hair cut yer muppet'

He also suggests that 20 years ago, it would have been sorted out with fists. In that instance, Lee would probably have spent time off the field and Marler would have been more than a bit smug. Im personally with Gatland when it comes to enforcement options on this one, but since we no longer tolerate retaliation by players, the governing body needs to make it clear that it will intervene instead.
What is interesting is the amount of time taken to decide this issue.

He should shut the feck up as should Jones, and let the thing take its course, they seem to be condoning behaviour which is clearly outside the Law. This was not just banter it was deeply unpleasant, unless there is something else we need to know.

Samson has accepted the apology, I'm not sure many would view this as deeply unpleasant, idiotic yes. I don't think there was any particular malice, otherwise surely he would have used more inflammatory language.
He did wrong and apologised, that was accepted, end of story for me.

Sandydragon wrote:A key point here is that none of us are professional sportsmen who have a responsibility to others. Regardless of what might be said on a rugby field, the governing body can't condone such a comment when its heard by the wider audience. This wouldn't be a point of discussion if the N word were used against a colored player. I accept that a former Welsh coach was referred to a the Gyppo - perhaps that is something that we as a board shouldn't tolerate?
I believe that it is possible to be too sensitive, but if the offended party takes offense then what was said was out of order. Lee took offense. Would we tolerate the use of the word 'gay' when used as an insult by one player to another?
No, that should not have been/shouldn't be tolerated. I never was one to refer to him in that way and found it distasteful.
What I find rich is the way people are reacting to this when they have said just as bad themselves, albeit, on a rugby forum.

Interesting comparison between the sanction for telling a supporter to f*ck off and the possible one for calling another player Gypsy Boy. Its a valid point.

Pretty embarrassing that a guy that has been in the media spotlight for years didn't think that his comments weren't stupid.

Would you feel the same if the comment had of been' Oi, black boy!'?
It's not just about PC numpties, by not punishing Marler's actions they are condoning it, and some people will think it's acceptable to repeat the comment and build on it.
When racism was rife and 'acceptable' in society, did that mean it was ok because some people didn't speak out against it when they were insulted?
Also from the majority of travellers that I know, they wouldn't make an official complaint against abuse like that anyway, because they want to keep themselves to themselves and they tend not to trust bureaucracy.
Your post is looking as naive as Gatland's comments.

Really, how dare you insult the naïve community, I shall write to my MP!!!
The point being, S. Lee has said it was just 'banter' and I assume that's who prompted GW 'banter' comment. I think its up to S. Lee to make a complaint and not other people to choose for him, he's a grown man and not exactly timid is he. How you've leaped from the review panel's actual press statements on the matter and the statements from Marler and Lee to this "by not punishing Marler's actions they are condoning it, and some people will think it's acceptable to repeat the comment and build on it" is beyond me quite frankly.
Your posts look like someone pushing his own agenda by latching on to another.
Edit: Maybe I have become a little immune to the issue with last few years living in the ME where racism towards all colors and creed not Arab regardless is fundamentally ingrained in the society to an appalling level, so calling somebody who openly associates himself to being from a gypsy heritage a "gypsy boy" doesn't really hit my buttons.

Some of the comments on here are suggesting that some posters on here are somehow using teletext from the 70s to communicate with the future. You might be surprised to find racism is illegal and the defense heat of the moment is not acceptable in court.

So if Lee had used the N word against Itoje 'in the heat of the moment' that would have been fine?
Great message to send out. Wouldn't surprise me if the Gypsie council (are they still called that?) took this further.

If he'd called him 'black boy' it wouldn't bother me, nor would I get upset by being called 'white boy', so I don't see what the major issues is.
If he'd called Lee a ' dirty gypsy cnut' I might see the point or Itoje a n&&^%r, clearly derogatory terms, some posters on here seem to be trying to find an issue like some sort of armchair 70's sociology student.
Edit: what's more offensive being called 'gypsy' or 'boy'

This. I've no desire to do the time warp. Maybe some nice policeman will bring them up to date.

Again, it isn't about what he's comfortable with either. It's about the sport apparently being comfortable with something football would have zero tolerance on.

Football is happy to have a world cup in one of the most racist countries in the world, where the locals believe foreign workers are slaves, let alone the intolerance applied to social demographic origin and religious beliefs. I haven't seen the FA refuse to be part of that WC on that basis.
Edit:
Xmas 2014 banned any public displays of Christmas as anti Islamic
Xmas 2015 banned any private or public school having a nativity play as anti Islamic
Imagine the uproar in the UK if we did the opposite and banned stuff
I haven't heard one peep from the FA

John Terry was banned for 4 games and fined £250k for his abuse of Anton Ferdinand.
