You’ll be grateful come Sunday morning! I met a contractor on site last week and he rocked up on crutches and in a boot. He played his first came of rugby for 8 years the previous Sat and ruptured his Achilles with his first carry…Peej wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 12:37 pm Having invested a few weeks in getting myself fit again for a rugby comeback having managed 70 minutes in 6 years (life, children, rough two years with lockdown etc) by training with the 1st team as an extra body/bag carrier, my club doesn't actually have a game this week...

Ha. Always the way. I’ve used up all my comebacks now sadly. My most recent club career lasted about 50 minutes. Played a second half, started the next game and finished with a rugby-ending injury 5mins in.

I’m desperate to get back playing every time I go to watch my local team and end up in the bar after the match. Sadly, the realisation I quit due to multiple concussions comes to the fore and all thoughts are put on hold until the next time I’m in the bar after a match. That and I get frustrated enough playing touch as to how much I’ve declined athletically…
My eldest loves his rugby so I’ve told myself I’ll get in rugby shape in the months before he makes his senior debut and I’ll hopefully have a run of games with him until the weather turns and matches become a ball adjacent N Yorks mud wrestling competition. Just gotta hope he doesn’t get straight in the first team.

I often think about putting the boots on but the quality of my knees will let me down and my daughter deserves better than a dad that can't play with her because he's got to spend Sunday icing his knees so that he can walk by Monday.

There's a reason I stick to watching the professionals for live rugby.Mellsblue wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 1:03 pm I’m desperate to get back playing every time I go to watch my local team and end up in the bar after the match. I feel no desire whatsoever to join them on the pitch.
Stick to touch rugby (well, walking - which is touch rugby done slower)

Yeah, as much as I’d like to play, there’s no way I’m getting back into playing rugby with my knee…

We, Melksham Stags, have a guy in his 70s playing for us. Mixed ability/all inclusive might work for you, it's 15 a side but mixed touch/contact players.fivepointer wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 1:21 pm In my 60's so there's no chance of a comeback.

Re: England V NZ
I got I to touch rugby this year, played my first 8 proper competitive games with refs and that. It was for Sweden so a bit of a learning curve. I am very envious of the scene in England just now.
I played my second game of xvs in 5 years a month ago in an old boys game. It was so much fun. I started at 13 and had a few dabs and then went to 9 after 15 minutes and was a complete so and so for the rest of the game. Quality. But got a minor knock to the head, which reminded me why I stopped. The starting 9 got his shoulder completely destroyed so definitely better to stick to touch for the most part.

220 miles is a bit of a way, especially as I don't have a car.
I'm happy to stick to my walking rugby for now.

I was playing Tag Rugby for a bit, but there's no organised touch round where I live in Hertfordshire.

Fullerians RFC at WD17 3BD

Rugby clubs are fine (though I'd never play for Fullers given where I grew up! ), it's more having regular touch that doesn't become pre-season and first team rugby, but runs throughout the yearWhich Tyler wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 2:03 pmFN Barbarians at WD25 0UU

I've never lived in Bath, born and bred in N Wiltshire, so Bath was the team covered by the local news etc.
Equally, I've never been Bristol, so I thought you meant Walcott as in the seaside town in Norfolk
Those 2 are both registered with https://englandtouch.org.uk but yeah, I wouldn't know if it's just a bit of offseason fun or year-round.

Had the sudden realisation that Jack Nowell may think he’s playing walking rugby.

Re: England V NZ
sorry to hear that. I retired at 36, then decided I needed a comeback for the vets at 40 and did my neck again first game back...still miss it

(had a brief stint in a memorial game for my best mate, tore groin and ruptured a finger tendon at 54; don't regret that either

My daughter is carrying the flame playing in a touch rugby league which she loves. My son smashed his collar bone in a training session at 17 and is now a decent jiu jitsu player.

Rugby finished decades back, football too. Squash went a few years back but I still play racketball for the club team in the county league. I'm one of the oldest regulars in Dorset at 73. Mentioning retirement attracted abuse from team-mates so I'll carry on for a few seasons yet. The camaraderie from team sport means so much - impossible to explain to those who have never experienced it.francoisfou wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 3:39 pm70s for me and it's the occasional game of pétanques!fivepointer wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 1:21 pm In my 60's so there's no chance of a comeback.

Ok. It's nap time now. It's starting to smell of stale pish and boiled eggs in here.
