Entirely agree. Sometimes not making a statement is more effective. Either way, trading verbal blows between two national coaches over an issue like this just looks a bit tawdry. After his intervention earlier in the week. Gatland should seriously consider when to keep his mouth shut.

I agree, I don't think Gatland is an appropriate mouthpiece for the WRU, he lacks the media savvy for a start.

I agree that Gatland should have kept schtum, but I think I can see how he was trapped into saying something. He would have been desperate to avoid looking like he was grasping at straws after a bad performance. We've all seen it before; players, coaches and fans being castigated for "sour grapes" etc. when protesting something obviously bad immediately after a defeat. So when given the chance to put the boot into England, he thought better of it and decided to say something conciliatory instead, hoping to be seen as defusing the situation and not attempting to deflect blame from himself. In many other circumstances he would have received credit for such an approach. Here, obviously, it was a bad call and "no comment" was really the only response which would have worked.

I think you could get moderately p*ssed following those rules.

An alternative is to drink every time Inverdale gets excited about the potential for the first English GS in over a decade. That should get you totally wasted.

Nothing against the English team who have been the best consistently this 6N and deserve to win it. But the media is going to go into overdrive by the end of Saturday. I may have to avoid the papers for several weeks.

He would have been better off, in my opinion, stating some thing like 'Marler apologies to Lee and as far as the team is concerned that's the end of the matter. We have a big game to prepare for, blah blah blah, and we will let the rugby authorities do their thing. In other news, rumours that there are players in possession of compromising photographs involving myself, Rob Howley and several farmyard animals are compleely false and in no way do they influence selection'.

I'm pretty sure that the "banter" comment came a couple of days after the game and even after his initial reaction to the comment. He'd done pretty well in his first comments and then stuffed it up.
