Lions very lucky to avoid losing that. Quite an achievement from 31-17 up.

Oh dear George. That was a moment you probably don't want to watch back.

What was the point of Garland calling up the reserves and then not using them, instead flogging his midweek team again for a full 80 almost to a man? What a twat! If you call them up then use them!!

indeed, one of the more stupid pieces of management, reaching almost SCW-esque proportions

Gats is saying it's because of all the fuss kicked up about devaluing the jersey.

It is an odd thing to say. If he didn't intend to use his bench except in emergencies, why not name players from the original squad in the first place?

Gatland was wrong to bring in players based solely on where they were playing. But having done that and named them on the bench, it takes a special kind of idiocy to ignore them when they may have been able to help secure a win.

Out of interest, is a player still a Lion as long as they are named as a replacement even if they don't get to play?

Strange thing to say. If he has changed his mind on this then it seems harsh on the players involved. You wouls think they would have thought - it might be embarrassing but at least we'll get a chance to play and impress the critics. Then Gatland decides they are just going to sit there awkwardly. Are they Lions?

quite. Its like he has Theresa May's former special advisors on the team.

Ahh well, as Gatland has said, no one will remember any of this trivia when the Lions win the test series...errr...

More a case of what Lawes and Henderson did very right. 2 of the standout performances from any second row this tour.

Ironically, it's devaluing the jersey even more by having the six be pariahs who aren't allowed to play, but will still go down in history as touring.

Bet Scotland are thrilled about losing Finn Russell shortly before the loss to Fiji for what appears to be literally no reason at all.

So he calls in 6 players as they are close at hand and unlikely to have any jetlag issues, then he is derided by the English media for devaluing the Lions jersey, he responds by not playing those players in an effort to appease the media, he is then derided for not playing those players.

Really?

A bit insulting to Russell in a way. Regarded by many as one of Europe's finest fly halves he gets just four minutes of game time--that is one big 'FuXX you' from Gatland that is going to turn even more Scots against the Lions. But then again Finn did say 'yes' and made a hefty sum of cash to do pheck all.

And the national coaches were told (allegedly) exactly what Gatland was planning.

I really can't wait for a coach from another home nation to take over this circus. I used to enjoy the lions, now it seems that even rugby fans fail to buy into whats its supposed to be about.

Where is it in his job description to appease, or even to give two short shits, about the media? I actually thought his decision to have late replacements come from players who aren't going to have jetlag is a good one (I was just baffled that Cory Hill was preferred to Gray!), so I'm just annoyed about him screwing people over by making them tackle bag holders and unnecessarily losing games by refusing to play them.

Seriously, why should he give a damn about the media? Especially since not a single person appeared to be suggesting, "Well, I'm annoyed you called up those players, but I'll forgive you as long as you never actually play them." In whose mind is that a sane or sensible compromise!?

And I assume he gets to keep the 60 pieces of kit so that will save him a few bob too. Win win really.
