This is a stupid, inconsistency in the Laws. If there's a penalty on the way and the ball is touched down it's 5 points and if you're lucky 7 (and usually not a card). If there's a penalty on the way and the ball isn't touched down, it's a guaranteed 7 and a yellow. This is stupid - we shouldn't be rewarded more for failing to touch down.Tuco Ramirez wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2024 11:00 am Pen try ?? if this was awarded when Botha, scored it would have been 7 points and a win..... not sure wat the law is on this?

My brain was too frazzled after the match to remember to do this, but here are the player stats. Shame we don't have stats for each half!

Heroic defence from Jenkins (17 tackles made, 0 missed), but plenty of great contributions - Domachowski and Wainwright (12,0), Reffell (11,0), Mann in 35 minutes (9,0), Elias in 40 minutes (10,1), Tompkins (10,1). Not sure where Adams was (0,0).
Winnett, Wainwright and Dyer made plenty of metres (122, 65, 70). And Tompkins was quite the link man with 21 passes.
From the overall game stats you'd think we'd have won - better possession, territory, much lower penalty count (4 vs 16), metres run, better scrum and lineout win % (but crucially, we had a lot more lineouts, so we lost 6/20, they only lost 2/6)

The concerning thing is that we failed to win when the opposition conceded 16 penalties, generally a team will lose if they concede more than 10, I can't see England shipping that many, tho the Ref is a Kiwi so they may find it hard to adapt to his interpretation of the laws, something they have failed to do in the past.Son of Mathonwy wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2024 2:19 pm My brain was too frazzled after the match to remember to do this, but here are the player stats. An interesting stat is that we won 70% of lineouts and Scotland only 66%, I suppose it was more noticeable due to the position of some of the lineouts and the number of lineouts we had, I'm not sure about the turnover stats as Reffell got more than 4 on his own and it says Scotland only conceded 4, the breakdown stats are very good for us.

True, but it was a big part of why we scored a point a minute for 26 minutes in the second half (that and the related yellows). It was a strange match and a first half even slightly less dire would have won it for us.Numbers wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2024 3:23 pmThe concerning thing is that we failed to win when the opposition conceded 16 penalties, generally a team will lose if they concede more than 10, I can't see England shipping that many, tho the Ref is a Kiwi so they may find it hard to adapt to his interpretation of the laws, something they have failed to do in the past.Son of Mathonwy wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2024 2:19 pm My brain was too frazzled after the match to remember to do this, but here are the player stats. The stats are interesting but they dont always tell the full story. We entered their 22 plenty of times in the first half, then screwed up. A knock on or a lost line out. Those mistakes utterly punished us and lost good territory and/or momentum.
On paper we should have won that easily but there's no hiding how bad that first half was.

Exactly. The first have wasn't a disaster in all aspects of play. We just couldn't get any points from all the chances in the 22 we had, mostly due to line out fails. But when the scoreboard is only going one way it seems like everything is awful.Sandydragon wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2024 4:34 pm The stats are interesting but they dont always tell the full story. Even the discipline was good overall, 4 penalties in 40 minutes is fine (but they were mostly in the first 10 if I recall correctly).

Re: Wales v Scotland
They were. We leaked 2 tries which is hardly disastrous, but our defence was allowing Scotland too much time and space. And we couldn’t fire any shots in return. If we had converted some of that pressure into points then the gap at halftime could have been manageable.Son of Mathonwy wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2024 5:02 pmExactly. But, we didn’t and we were our own worst enemies. I seem to recall that we even managed to screw up line outs when the Scots didn’t even bother to challenge. That’s just awful.
