Gatland Leaving Wales ?

Post by Rich »

Has Gatland coached Wales for the last time ?

Daily Mail usually gets these things right.

With respect this could just be another round of media gossip .. didnt the same happen last time. I beleive Gatland is not due back in Wales after the Lions till October 2017 . That may be the reason he has notified family and friends of an extended stay afterwards.

However it would not suprise me if after 8 years away from home he went back and it would make a lot of his antogonists happy. But it would certainly be a suprise for him to cancel his contract without something worthwhile at the end. If the Lions won the series that may be the catalyst... but otherwise... I am not yet convinced.

For me I like Dai Young as a coach however that also would be a diversion from what the WRU have been planning to date but I would like to see how this season goes with Wasps before we jump into that fire.

We will await what thise in the loop come up with... :D :D

Who knows? What is Gatland leaving for? If the lions win then I'm sure he will head to NZ, but the job he wants is occupied. Not much point in him jumping until he knows he has a soft landing.

He won't go without a nice new position, but then he has a year in NZ to sort himself out. But it would have to be good for him to end his Wales contract early, methinks.

Seems slightly strange to jump before the Lions series though. An indication that he thinks the result of the tour won't look particularly amazing on his CV?

Or is it all just made up?

Dai Young the favourite? This does really seem like picking the best Welshman, not the best man for the job. How about we ignore nationality...?
(Again, this could be totally made up.)

As its in the Mail I'm loath to believe it (although you never know). Young has been suggested by many fans I know, but only because he is coaching at a good level. I'm not so sure that he would be a hit in Wales, or at least not immediately and lets be honest, if Gatland goes and Young is hired, then he only has to the next RWC to actually make an impact.

If Eddie Jones is only with England until 2019 then we could do worse than to look to him post the next RWC. There are good coaches out there, its just getting them when they are available, which for many these days seems to tie in wit the RWC.

The Fail is reporting that Gatand was offered a job in NZ, but turned it down as his Welsh contract would not have expired at that point. Gatland making a strong case that he was not intending to leave and being hurt by the suggestion that he would walk away mid contract.

Time will tell I suppose, but as far as the Daily Mail is concerned, the notion of them grabbing the wrong end of the stick isn't hard to believe.
