terror attack in Westminster

Post by Which Tyler »

Apparently involving cars on pavements, knives and gunshots
Parliament in lockdown
Sounds like 4 dead so far, 1 copper and 1 attacker

BBC seem to think there were 2 attackers, Scotland Yard saying "1 confirmed"

Terrible News. Thoughts are with victims and their families. Hopefully its over now

I hear some French school children are also part of the victims.

Such attacks seem impossible to prevent.

With a little more information, sounds like a car mounted the pavement on Westminster Bridge, injuring pedestrians (including French school kids), killing 2, knocking one into the river, since rescued alive.
1 perp runs to Westminster Palace and stabs a copper; there may or may not be a 2nd perp too (BBC, the Met officially don't think so).
Then towards more cops who see him coming and shoot him 3 times.

4 dead, 20 wounded.

Sounds like the sort of rabid lone-wolf, which is impossible to prevent. May be terrorism, may be suicide-by-police.

Terror classification gives the cops extra powers to find out, and find out if he was acting alone or co-ordinated

Bloody tough on the French, they seem to get it wherever they go.
It's early, but it sounds like the Police reacted about as efficiently as they could under the circumstances.

Apparently committed by Abu Izzadeen who was well known to the police. They are going to be crucified in the media in the weeks following this if true. He is a well known hate preacher.

My French wife-ish was told by her boss that it was the kids' own fault, and if they don't like it they should have stayed in their own country.
Yes, he voted for Brexit, even though he's an immigrant himself (40-odd years, from India). He also thinks the Trump is great, and encourages Ali to vote for LePenn.

I can't even begin to understand wtf he was thinking/meaning; but he's not going to be her boss for much longer; though Ali still wants to give 2 weeks notice (I'd have walked out there and then personally)

Probably, even if they didn't have any actual evidence to proceed on.

As stated by others, lone wolf attacks are virtually impossible to attack, even when there is a police presence that can react quickly.

This seems to have been withdrawn now, since his brother phones C4 and pointed out that Abu Izzadeen is still sitting in a prison cell somewhere - as alibis go, it's a pretty good one.

Another sad day in our history, equal parts pathetic and disgusting. We'll have better days though, and if safety is a more akin to a police state I'll take our sometimes very sad status quo

Don't know if I notice a slightly different reaction from previous attacks. Seems to be more "we'll get thru this together" as a first response rather than sadness and shock, which is obviously still there but somehow less so. I dont mean that in a negative way, in fact I think it's a fantastic way to respond. Probably just my perception of course.

So I would add 'ultimately uplifting' to your "pathetic and disgusting". I don't mean to be insensitive to the families and friends of those killed and injured, but the stories of bravery that come out of this tragedy seem to be the kind of stories that makes us all stronger, in the end.
It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

The reaction does seem different this time. I think those in their teens and twenties are now used to these attacks, as older generations were used to them thanks to the IRA. To me, there certainly seems less hysteria on social media, not that I'm a prolific user.
In some ways this is a good thing. These morons want exposure and a reaction, and the less we give them the better. On the other hand, what a sad world we live in when these sort of things are almost expected and the reaction is 'it could've been a lot worse'.

You sad, dozy twat. This is exactly the response they're looking to generate.

Wise up, indeed.

That is a really good point; there's also an element of this having pretty low casualty figures (5 is too high, but still, nothing like the others we've seen in the last couple of years) and the fact that we're talking about 1 lone nut-job with access to a car and a kitchen knife; so it's not as if there was detailed planning that could have been intercepted.
I've also not seen any reports of there being a self-acknowledged religious element to this; he doesn't appear to have shouted "Allah Ackbar" or had a car full of ISIL flags or anything like that. He could yet just be another Michael Ryan, Thomas Hamilton or Derrick Bird who's skin colour / religion is entirely incidental.

Similar to school shootings in the states, I wonder if the media stopped reporting on these issues if the rate of them would drop. Why do it if you're not going to get the recognition?
