Video editing software

Post by Parsifal »

On my PC, I have a selection of software ranging from Roxio Creator, which I was very used to but abandoned it after innumerable crashes on a couple of particularly challenging projects and other issues. I also have Power Director 12 which I'm currently fluent with and have been wondering whether to upgrade it to PD14. On the Mac side, I have Toast, Final Cut Pro X which I've used less than PD and Adobe Premiere Pro 6 which I haven't used at all. Does anybody suggest one over another? Is FC Pro X worth the additional learning curve over PD14? I realise there's plenty more out there inc Avid etc. I haven't started editing/burning 4K, only AVCHD/Blu-ray. Cheers.

There's just so many different video editors out there. Some do particular jobs, some appear more fancy but don't do much more.

Here's a few that may help though:
AVI Demux
VirtualDubMod
VirtualDubModMPEG2
MKV Tools
Avanti
AutoMKV
Handbrake

Most of those, possibly all of them are freeware.

I used to like AVS Video Converter but I've no idea what it's like these days. Nero make some good programs too but they tend to be very bloated. I haven't updated since v10 of the multimedia suite which means I'm probably missing many of the latest features but it does what I need it to do.

Not sure about Mac software though.

This is a good site where you can find many different types of video editing software. Quite a lot of freeware too.

I think Final Cut is being phased out, it depends whether it's for work or home use really, if you want something to stick on your CV then Audition would probably be the best way to go.

Cheers Numbers. Final Cut is being phased out? I hadn't heard about that. I do alot of photography for one of the local clubs and I'm more than happy with the software. I can combine video and photos with the excellent ProShow Producer 7 but, of late, I've decided to look at alternatives which are specifically for video. PowerDirector has always been pretty handy as there are reasonable menus available irrespective some issues with them which I won't go into. PD renders quickly and I can edit four video shots simultaneously with the MultiCam feature; however, I thought I'd explore other options just out of interest.
