Real question from ignorant furriner
How is Rhys Carre eligible for Wales selection? Don’t you have to have 60 caps if playing elsewhere? Beeb saying he may be out of early 6N games but how was he ever in? Cheers

Re: Real question from ignorant furriner
I think the policy only applies to capped players, so if you sign outside Wales before they've ever selected you then you're eligible. I would add that probably means you need to then sign into a Welsh region for your next contract once capped, but I don't know that's the case, they re-write the regs on it as and when it suits them (no reason they shouldn't when it's their policy) and it often has more holes than Swiss cheese anyway

Basically Diggers is right, as he was playing in England uncapped then he was alway eligible. How he is capped he need to come back to Wales when his contract expires, unless he has options for additional years, which apparently is fine, as per Tomos Francis.

Assuming clubs like the idea of a test standard prop, and they might, does he still need to return home if the contract offer in Wales is some percentage below an offer from outside Wales?Ross. What I like is that he signed a contract with Sarries, knowing full well a) the rules and b) that he was likely to appear in the RWC warmups at least and was definitely on Wales's radar. Yet he gets a pass because "he signed a contract before Wales capped him." Yet Rhys Webb signs a contract with Toulon before the policy was even invented and then gets told that he's out, no exceptions, no bending of the rules, no excuse that he didn't know this rule was coming in.Sandydragon wrote:Basically Diggers is right, as he was playing in England uncapped then he was alway eligible. The policy is a mess.

Yep, if there is an offer on the table from a Welsh region then he would be duty bound to accept if he wants to play International rugby, I would imagine we'll see him back in Wales at the end of the season at the latest the way things are going at Sarries with their finances, perhaps Sam Wainwright too.Digby wrote:Assuming clubs like the idea of a test standard prop, and they might, does he still need to return home if the contract offer in Wales is some percentage below an offer from outside Wales?Ross. Seems pretty harsh to me, thus I wondered if an offer was 25% or maybe 33% less would he still be so obligated. Works for the regions I guess, sort of.Numbers wrote:Yep, if there is an offer on the table from a Welsh region then he would be duty bound to accept if he wants to play International rugby, I would imagine we'll see him back in Wales at the end of the season at the latest the way things are going at Sarries with their finances, perhaps Sam Wainwright too.Digby wrote:Assuming clubs like the idea of a test standard prop, and they might, does he still need to return home if the contract offer in Wales is some percentage below an offer from outside Wales?Ross. Not seen Wainwright, at least not that I recall, but I'd have thought keeping him and Carre would be cheaper than keeping the likes of Koch and Figallo

I think the policy is fine (with the glaring exception of its massively unfair application to Webb).Puja wrote:What I like is that he signed a contract with Sarries, knowing full well a) the rules and b) that he was likely to appear in the RWC warmups at least and was definitely on Wales's radar. Carre's position was unusual - most promising players will not have the chance to temporarily evade the policy in that way, ie they'll be mid-contract, probably for a Welsh club, when they first get capped.

Saw the same explanation for the Rees Zammit lad in the paper this morning.

I think the WRU wanted to make an example, Webb was it although there are plenty of plains of unfair treatment.Puja wrote:What I like is that he signed a contract with Sarries, knowing full well a) the rules and b) that he was likely to appear in the RWC warmups at least and was definitely on Wales's radar. I don’t have a problem with the 60 cap limit, I find it odd that younger players with promise can be let go so easily.
