Rules question

Post by General Zod »

Attacking team scores a try. While they did so, a defender high tackled the attacking fly half and gets a yellow card.

My question is whether there is any further punishment. I want to say that the kick-off becomes a penalty for the attacking team. My pal says it’s just a normal re-start.

I have the rules app on my phone but for whatever reason can’t find the answer.

Was it in the act of scoring? If it prevents the attacker scoring in a better position it is technically a penalty try.

I suspect the law you are looking for is 20.1. It is a little vague depending on timing but if the ball is dead:
"At the point where play would have restarted or, if that place is on the touchline or within 15 metres of it, the mark is on the 15-metre line, in line with that place."

I don't think the ball is dead so yellow and no pen from what you describe. If he had scored then gets hit high law 20.1 applies. I think.

Depends when the high hit was. If it was after the try was scored, then the ref can award a penalty restart on the halfway line to the team who scored. I've seen it happen before where the team just brings up a long range kicker and turns 7 points into 10 (I'd love to see someone lose a game on that actually).

However, if it's a high tackle on the player who passed the ball to the try scorer then it's ruled that the attacking team got the advantage.

Mostly when I've seen that rule enforced, it's for sliding in dangerously on the try scorer or for a defender taking the celebrations personally and starting a fight.

Was thinking of a high tackle on the player who passed to put the tryscorer in. Knew I’d seen a penalty re-start before, so thanks for all the info, guys.

Reading the rules is probably a good idea for all players during the lockdown. Helps you know what you can get away with!
