Under 20s 6N squad
Sean Lineen has named his squad (I presume it will be trimmed) for June 6Ns with a couple of snatches from England, Ollie Melville and Elliot Gourlay .
I am going to try and get a bit more educated on the younger age grade and women's team but for now, I want to know if there are any genuine prospects in the team named.
Twitter fans seem to be bigging up the boy Glendinning and Claydon.

No Edinburgh or Glasgow players so not expecting to recognise many. I had thought that Cameron Scott was on an academy contract with Edinburgh but evidently he's not been training with the first team.Scottish Caley Fan wrote:Sean Lineen has named his squad (I presume it will be trimmed) for June 6Ns with a couple of snatches from England, Ollie Melville and Elliot Gourlay .

7 from Glasgow and 4 from Edin academies IIRC. Stage 3 academy players are supposed to train with the full pro squad but Cockerill has a bit of a reputation for dividing his squad like a Lions test 23 and dirt trackersswitchskier wrote:No Edinburgh or Glasgow players so not expecting to recognise many. Re: Under 20s 6N squad
BTW Offside Line U20 squad does not match the SRU one, the latter having 41 players, not 36, which might be because that ToL one is months old

Re: Under 20s 6N squad
and still possible that Lineen will call up Jamie Dobie and Matt Currie when pro team duties end (U20 6N is June IIRC) if they want to have a real pop at it. Dobie may well be required for the national squad, possibly Currie but he is a better bet for the U20s and would walk in to the starting XV
Currie and the 2 Glasgow academy locks (Samuel and Williamson) were training with the senior 6N squad recently, I'll take that as an indicator of how they are thought of

Is Muncaster injured? Would have thought he'd be in? I think he is still eligible...septic 9 wrote:and still possible that Lineen will call up Jamie Dobie and Matt Currie when pro team duties end (U20 6N is June IIRC) if they want to have a real pop at it. The red card was justified as was the yellow. Scotland were prob slightly the better team before the red.
Ref had some interesting calls, at one prop, player went to tackle pick and go player , never went back inside and then made the tackle - no penaltyin another player goes onto his elbows to het the ball, causes a knock on- no penalty.
Scotland need to keep 15 on the pitch but they looked ok

Anyone watching the wales game? It's quite good fun but as usual we look underpowered in the age groups.
Welsh commentators are wonderfully one eyed.

Well that was a rubbish second half. Lost count of the number of knock ons or passes that arrived at players feet. Made no impression against 14 men and rarely looked like creating space. Lost four (I think) lineouts too, and it looked like they'd never practiced one. Not a performance that suggests that many will be stepping up.

Re: Under 20s 6N squad
So I watched most of the scotland games.
Ireland, England and Wales.
What is clear is while I don’t actually think they are underpowered , their ability to execute under pressure and build phases is poor, they drop back to individual skills and quite a few of the players just lack the skill to execute at this level.
Some really quality players but some real brain fart moments.
The scrum we had on their 5 was a bit of a disaster as 8 and 9 didn’t quite get on the same page and the Scottish backs just panicked and passed the ball without ever committing a man

Re: Under 20s 6N squad
To be fair, they were missing several of their best players at times and the likes of Dobie and Currie have professional experience that others don't.
Apparently there are 12+ of these guys back next year and they will have had precious little game time in the last 18 months.
Performances were unacceptable at times, but the picture isn't quite as bleak as it may seem.

17 back next season, pretty unprecedented I think.Big D wrote:To be fair, they were missing several of their best players at times and the likes of Dobie and Currie have professional experience that others don't.

Been very disappointing, we are missing a few but I think every team was. The age profile gives some optimism though. There are some worries, and some obvious pluses
Worries - Redpath has some folk purring over his performance, couldn't see it myself. Passing very erratic over the tournament as was decision making. But still time for him. And no back up 9, had a 10 doing that
Townsend, back next year hopefully better, but a pale shadow of his old man at the same age
Much hyped Warriors academy locks Salmon and Williamson like lost boys most of the time. Huge boys, but lost. Again think both have another year to sharpen up physically. Drummond immense in open play but a disaster at lineouts. I'm always loath to pin blame on the thrower but seemed we messed the call and timing so often when he was on. That and his short stature for set piece a huge challenge for him
Most of the backs disappointed. Gray is combative but can't see him playing centre professionally, not sure he has the pace for wing. Melville another much expected of but didn't deliver. He is quick and is a decent open filed runner but he is no Shane Williams or Kolbe, no, not a Darcy Graham. Size might be against him.
Pluses - Harrison when he got a chance to show that what he did for Edinburgh when he got a chance was no fluke. Still just 18 I think, shame he is going back to occasional bench warming for Cockerill. A star in the making. Three very good back rows at least, again Muncaster a start likely to wane under Cockerill's conservatism. He was immense all tournament. Leatherbarrow a real find.
Not sure if the game plan yesterday was down to a change of plan or stumbled on/ Much more direct carrying, one out ball to a player running at pace. Loads of easy yards. Ball not going past 10 so much - cos it died when it did. Shame it took 4 bad losses to see the obvious problems
