Gatland gets his RWC excuses in early

Post by Son of Mathonwy »

Yeah mate, I wish you'd turned down the job too but you don't really think that - no one else was offering you anything like what the idiots at the WRU were.

There we have it, if Wales fuck up at the RWC it's all down to the state of Welsh rugby (of which Gatland was allegedly ignorant), nothing to do with current coaching (you can blame the previous guy though).

I don't think he needs to make any excuses, he inherited an aging squad of players who rightly so want to maximise their earnings as they reeach the end of their careers, he can't really be held accountable for the lack of progression as he picked the best players for the job in his previous tenure.

If there's one thing that can be relied upon is that he'll have the team in the best condition going into the world cup, he has proven that.

I don't think anyone can argue that he's had a very difficult situation to deal with what with the lack of money within Welsh rugby and the lack of player development since he left in 2019, I liked the reference to the 2011 squad where there were a great deal of surprises in his team selection, if he can get the younger players believing in themselves then I think we could do quite well, injuries permitting.

For the record I didn't want to see his return as I thought Pivac had done enough to get a shot at the World Cup but I can't see how you are making out he's getting his excuses in early as, in reality, all he has stated is fact.

""When I came into the Six Nations, I had no idea. I didn't realise a lot of the things that were going on and the issues that were behind rugby and the squad and the players," he said.

I'm calling bullshit on that.

Just gonna say exactly this. I am in Canada and I knew all about this from any Welsh sports website. Kinda makes him look foolish to have not done any checks or even read a website article if this is how he feels. Warren, should have joined rugby rebels and checked out RedTigerLily;s board - got all the scoop you needed

Taking the pressure off the squad and onto him is the hidden motive I can see

I’m sure there’s details that he, like us, didn’t know. But there were rumblings of player contract issues and other issues way before he joined. I suppose if I’m being charitable he could have reasonably expected the contracts to have been sorted much earlier in the season and not the total balls up it was.

But he certainly should not have thought that this would be an easy ride. The aging squad should have been obvious to anyone for instance.

I suspect this is about taking some pressure off the squad and letting them develop as a team with Joe Public moaning about Gays rather than them.

I'm sure he'll get them fit. Also, he should give them a structured enough game to beat Fiji. After that I have no idea . . .

I'm quietly confident we'll do better than expected, one thing that can be said for Gatland is he had us in good shape for World Cups.
