Re: Ewwww
You know what? I'm fine with it. I have always resisted the idea of selling the stadium name as tacky and cheap, but it's better than selling the stadium itself and it's free money that will go towards upgrading it, without going into crippling debt, and keeping it as a moneyspinner that funds the rest of the game. As long as they got a good chunk of money for it, I'm sanguine.
Besides, everyone will call it Twickenham anyway, so it's a complete waste of Allianz's money anyway.

Re: Ewwww
Of course, but still gross.
I'm also prepared for the New Rec to be renamed (probably to "sucks") in about 35 years when building work actually starts in Keynsham

Re: Ewwww
I dislike it being called the Allianz stadium because there's multiple stadiums called that already (or variations thereof). Couldn't they have kept Twickenham in there and gone with the Twickenham Allianz Stadium rather than just eradicating the history of the name in one go.

Re: Ewwww
Where did you see that figure? If that's true, that does seem extremely low.
Just looked it up and the estimates to renovate Twickenham ranged from £300m to £660m - you'd be hoping that the sponsorship deal would be taking at least a decent bite out of that.

Re: Ewwww
This BBC article says, or rather speculates, that the deal is worth £100m over ten years:

If you are going to sell the family silver, at least get a good price for it. And you would have thought that Allianz would have seen a benefit in associating the Twickenham name with thier own.

Re: Ewwww
Allianz pay a similar amount to Bayern Munich for the naming rights of their stadium.
There's also some Allianz Future Fund that will provide funds for grassroots clubs.
The Principality is roughly £15m over 10 years, so we got a much better deal than the Welsh.

Re: Ewwww
How do we know it's undersold?
It's the naming rights, not the title deeds.
Who here actually knows roughly what stadium naming rights cost in the current market, and without looking it up?
What values are we comparing it to? Because we need that to know if it's priced too high, too low, or about right.

Re: Ewwww
2 seconds on google shows this
https://www.sportcal.com/sponsorship/ar ... ntil-2028/
£50Mp.a. is for the front-of-shirt sponsorshipArsenal, the English soccer giants, and Dubai-based airline Emirates have today (August 2) extended their long-running shirt sponsorship deal until 2028.
The renewed agreement is believed to be worth around £50 million ($64 million) per season, an increase on the previous £40-million per-year contract which was claimed to be the largest sponsorship deal in the Premier League club's history.
Emirates' shirt sponsorship of Arsenal was due to expire at the end of the upcoming 2023-24 season, while its stadium naming rights deal runs until 2028. Those deals were worth £150 million combined when signed in November 2012.
Stadium naming looks like £150M over 15 years
Looks like the Twickenham naming rights are in the same ball park as some of the bigger names in football
A further 3 seconds (I scrolled down once) showed this
https://www.90min.com/posts/football-mo ... als-ranked
5. Besiktas/Vodafone - £6m
4. Bayern Munich/Allianz - £6.4m
3. Fenerbahce/Ulker - £7m
2. Atletico Madrid/Wanda - £8.4m
1. Manchester City/Etihad - £15m
