The next olympic sport?

Post by Which Tyler »

A petition calling for jousting to be made an Olympic sport has been launched by English Heritage.

The charity's jousting expert Dominic Sewell told BBC's Radio 5 live that the medieval pursuit was a "worldwide phenomenon that should be recognised".

Only about 20 people in the UK joust competitively, but the charity said tournaments were held across the world.

Lance Armstrong should be reassured by that -
his name does suggest he may be quite good at jousters..

Good to read that they're rocking the armour. I assume there would also be suitably outlandish heraldry for each participant? And squires too.

EDIT: I guess that a NZ jousting team would be the black knights. F*ck yeah. The black knight always triumphs...

Well it couldn't be worse than golf.

The golf is better than the u23s soccer event, both are really out of place in the Olympics, tennis too for me.

Before worrying about new sports, they should first ensure that all current sports are equally open to both sexes.

They've already finally got women's pole vault in. Now it's time for men's rhythmic gymnastics.

Dear god no. Much better toget rid of that abomination. Though men's synchro swimming could work.

They should certainly worry about countries who don't open sport to both sexes and/or or force women to compete in impractical amounts of clothing

New Sports in contention for Tokyo 2020 are:
Baseball/softball (previously in from 1992/96 - 2008) - I'm not a fan of team sports being included
Karate - I thought this was already in. Why not combine boxing, judo, Taekwondo and Karate in Olympic MMA?
Skateboarding - No. It's not a sport. It's an impressively athletic hobby rated out of 10.
Sports climbing - I believe this is a vertical race, with no objective "style" scoring, so I would accept it as a sport. I'm not sure it's sufficiently mainstream for the Olympics though.
Surfing - see skateboarding.

And all 5 are officially in. No pressure on the Japanese karate team to win the first karate gold in a home games!

But seriously - Olympic surfing?

Faster, Higher, Stronger, Wetter.

Japan will fuck up the Karate like we did the rugby. Plus side is they'll smash the Yanks at Baseball. That'll be funny.

Edit: Baseball isn't in the next olympics

It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

They should replace one of the wimpy legs (horses) from the Pentathlon and replace it with a hand-to-hand combat discipline.

Tug o'war...it was in the games until 1920, has ancient history in many great civilisations and will not be exclusive to those who can afford specialist equipment or coaches.
Also, it's mostly done standing up.
I wonder if those champion farmers from Glaws are still going ?

Taking a cue from diving, I think there is great scope for expanding the Olympics by introducing synchronised versions of existing solo sports.

Synchronised pole vault, for instance: 2 athletes, 2 poles, 1 cross bar.

You're well behind the curve on this one. The Paralympics already have this in some track and cycling events.

The Americans would win easily, a few beach ball texans would be impossible to shift, tho if it were stipulated that they had to stand up then the opponents could potentially induce a coronary before the end of the contest.
