Re: America
Damn. I’d read about this part but actually seeing it is something else.
What is it about this system that breeds/nurtures sociopaths in this way? Is it just the size of the country and the extent of the media coverage that makes the number of incidents like this stand out? Is this just what happens to normal when given this kind of power?
This demented obsession with guns, the military, a notion of patriotism/justice/honour that exists purely to justify lethal force, seems to run so deep in so many.
I certainly don’t think this sort of thing is unique to America, not even close, but it still feels like the US view themselves as the standard bearers of modern, civilised, free society.

There's a strong correlation between thinking you're the best and behaving like an arsehole.Mikey Brown wrote:I certainly don’t think this sort of thing is unique to America, not even close, but it still feels like the US view themselves as the standard bearers of modern, civilised, free society.

It's a complete lack of accountability. That's why the policing discussion here and in the States should be absolutely poles apart. Our system of accountability is pretty sophisticated. There's is non-existent.Mikey Brown wrote:Damn. I’d read about this part but actually seeing it is something else.

Seen enough of these now to think it isn’t just some freak of occurrence.

Re: America
Loving the Georgia governor taking some of his own cities/mayors to court to argue they can't enforce a requirement for people to wear masks, and is doing so to help people survive (and by people he means businesses)
Sort of an interesting case because the state trumps the local areas, but the mayors might have localised police powers in a pandemic that entitle them to enforce a ruling on masks anyway. It does rather beg the question of haven't you got anything better to be doing than contesting a requirement for masks? If you want to support state businesses in light of the need to wear masks issue free masks

I don't know what sort of answer you even want to that. Has this happened in front of a TV news crew or a journalist? I have no idea. Is it actually what it appears to be? It would seem like something worth checking.morepork wrote:Are these surfacing on social media only?

It's called a boxer's fracture - and yet get it from punching someone in the face with inadequate hand protection - not from someone kicking your hand away.A police officer punched and dragged a homeless man who was allegedly taking up more than one seat on a near-empty subway train in Manhattan, body camera video from May shows.
But Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance is charging the bloodied man with felony assault, punishable by up to seven years in prison, for allegedly kicking the officer’s hand while the cop tried to cuff him on the platform of the Midtown station.
...
Saha said in a criminal complaint that Long told him Joseph kicked his right hand while the officers attempted to cuff the ejected rider on the platform. Long, according to Saha, “sustained swelling and substantial pain to the knuckles of his right hand and was transported to the hospital.”
“He informs me that because of the swelling he is unable to open and close his hand without experiencing pain,” Saha said.
ETA: Apparently Vance is the same DA who refused to prosecute Harvey Weinstein due to a lack of evidence.

Out of interest, have you seen the news and are being sarcastic, or is that just really fun timing?canta_brian wrote:You’re probably right. I expect we will never know. Re: America
It's insane that martial law is stealthily being imposed in a thinly veiled attempt to cover the canvas with a cartoon culture war, all in an effort to discredit the fundamental reason for civil unrest, which ironically is being reinforced by systemic police brutality.
On a related note, I would suspect that some private security firms have been contracted by the government to crack heads in the name of statues. Something like Blackwater security founded by the brother of current Education secretary Betsy DeVos, for example...
How much resource has been spunked away in the effort to suppress legitimate civil rights concerns that could otherwise have been used to test and trace, provide a safety net for the needlessly unemployed, and coordinate a global effort to treat the pest?
This is a nightmare.
