Ford's 'rupture' is presumably a partial tear, certainly a nasty injury.
Is rugby unique in allowing seriously injured players to hobble off? The practice ought to be reviewed before somebody gets sued for contributory negligence.

I've always thought that. There is a culture of "No, I'm fine, I can tough it out and walk off myself" (it was a mark of how bad Ford's injury was that he even allowed himself to be helped), and it surely exacerbates injuries. Needs changing.Oakboy wrote:I have been present (at squash matches) when two people have snapped achilles tendons. Neither could possibly have walked a single step. Yeah, it won't be a snapped tendon, is it the same leg as last time?Oakboy wrote:I have been present (at squash matches) when two people have snapped achilles tendons. Imagine how many would’ve watched if it had been an entertaining match!

Penny has finally dropped that the Premiership (and rugby in general) needs free to air tv coverage to reach a bigger audience and grow.

Do the massive differences (on the two channels) between average and peak audiences indicate how boring the match was as a spectacle or is that degree of variation normal?Mellsblue wrote:Imagine how many would’ve watched if it had been an entertaining match!

Agreed but is there/will there be any free to air TV? Without getting into political debate, will the BBC/licence fee situation continue or will everything switch to a form of pay-per-view? I just hope the rugby authorities keep everything under review rather than just short-term cash benefits.fivepointer wrote:Penny has finally dropped that the Premiership (and rugby in general) needs free to air tv coverage to reach a bigger audience and grow.

Striking the right balance between coin and eyeballs is every minor sport’s issue. Massie-Taylor seems to have done more in six months than his predecessors ever managed, IMO.fivepointer wrote:Penny has finally dropped that the Premiership (and rugby in general) needs free to air tv coverage to reach a bigger audience and grow.

I'd expect fairly normal. Plenty of people might skip the pre or post match sections of the show or knowing it was close tune in for the final twenty minutes etc. I don't know the rugby detail but when I've seen TV coverage numbers previously there's normally a jump from average to peak viewers.Oakboy wrote:Do the massive differences (on the two channels) between average and peak audiences indicate how boring the match was as a spectacle or is that degree of variation normal?Mellsblue wrote:Imagine how many would’ve watched if it had been an entertaining match!

Agree about the free to air aspect and the impact of the new chairman. It's the right way to go about it. Rugby is a niche sport, it's not football, we need to make it more available to people to pull them in.
Tinds on his podcast made a good point about the Baabaas game on Sunday. Top tiers of Twickers not open, why were those tickets not given to community sports clubs? Why not have deals through grassroots clubs where when the club buys them you get two free children's tickets for every adult. Pack the place out. RFU missed a chance there.

Mind, having watched that Barbarians game, I'd say that was bullet dodged rather than opportunity missed.FKAS wrote:I'd expect fairly normal. Lots of tries, sun out. Great chance for kids to visit Twickers who might not otherwise have the chance. Result doesn't really matter.Puja wrote:Mind, having watched that Barbarians game, I'd say that was bullet dodged rather than opportunity missed.FKAS wrote:I'd expect fairly normal. It was bonkers not to have the semis on FTA as well. Maybe next year.fivepointer wrote:Penny has finally dropped that the Premiership (and rugby in general) needs free to air tv coverage to reach a bigger audience and grow.
